This video demonstrates many ways in which are minds are being tricked in various ways. Within talking about this, it brings out the topic of irrational behaviors, and irrational decision making. This plays a huge role in the claim that the environment affects behaviors. One example mentioned was physical appearance in which he did a experiment on. This video also explains that when it comes to building the physical world, people happen to understand their limitations and build around it. On the other hand, when it comes to the mental world with designing things such as health care, and retirement, people forget that they are limited.

Friends affecting behaviors

In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury, demonstrates that friends are one of the many components that affect how the environment shapes our behaviors. For example, the way Clarisse and Montag talk would never be the same as Montag and Mildred talking. In the book it says “ And then, very slowly, as he walked, he tilted his head back in the rain, for just a few moments, and opened his mouth....”(Bradbury 21). Montag did this because he wanted to know how it felt to act like Clarisse or do something that would consider him “not normal” like Clarisse. This proves that when Montag is around Clarisse the way he acts tends to change in the sense that he acts more carelessly or freely. In the book, another occasion when Clarisse and Montag are talking, Clarisse begins to say "You're one of the few who put up with me. That's why I think it's so strange you're a fireman, it just doesn't seem right for you, somehow" (Bradbury 21).This is seen as a form of symbolism because before this point a fireman wasn't seen as anything "bad" until Clarisse says this, which then points out that a fireman is possibly someone who starts fires instead of putting them out. Another thing that supports this claim is that Clarisse said that she couldn't see him being someone that does that. There was also another example of symbolism throughout the book. Which happened when it says "He found a few books where he had left them, near the garden fence. Mildred god bless her, had missed a few" (Bradbury 115-116). This example is from when Mildred had turned in Montag for having all of the books but yet didn't let some of the books get destroyed. This is considered as symbolism because why would Mildred leave any books there in the first place if she didn't feel anything towards Montag or thought what he was doing was actually right. Another example of friends in the environment influencing a person’s behavior is how Mildred acts with Montag around her friends versus when she is alone with Montag. For instance, in the book Mildred says “ Ladies, once a year, every fireman's allowed to bring one book home, from the old days, to show his family how silly it all was, how nervous that sort of thing can make you, how crazy”(Bradbury, 95). Mildred tries to act like books are a bad thing and that Montag just needs to show them how bad they are so they can see how “crazy” people can get from reading them. She is also acting like they didn’t just have this huge discussion about how good books actually are but instead went on to act like Montag was the crazy one. When Mildred is alone with Montag and is told about the books and how they are not what every says they are she begins to listen. She supports and helps him sort through all of the books he brought home to find something to change people’s minds about the books themselves. Then the next few days when Montag is laying out his plan and happens to freak out on Mrs. Bowles, and Mrs. Phelps she acts as if she has never helped him.

The "higher intelligence"

In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury, demonstrates that higher intelligence people are also one of the many components that affect how the environment shapes our behaviors. More specifically Professor Faber and the five men Montag comes across after crossing the river. One example is how Professor Faber acts before and after knowing what Montag is up to. When Montag calls Professor Faber and asks him how many copies of the Bible he has left Faber responds with “This is some sort of trap! I can’t just talk to anyone on the phone!” (Bradbury, 72). In this certain example, Professor Faber acts as if he is being set up because that is what he believes is happening. Professor Faber soon figures out what Montag is actually up to and is not the reason he originally assumed. When they finally meet in person for the first time, and Montag shows him a book Faber says, “It's as good as I remember. Lord, how they've changed it- in our `parlours' these days”(Bradbury 77). Meaning, that he is someone actually not against books and is someone that cares enough about books and what they could do for others to help Montag carry through with his plan. Another example of people that are considered of a higher intelligence are the five men that Montag comes across when he crosses the river. In the book, it states that “Montag drank the bitter fluid”(Bradbury 140). This means that without knowing the men well enough he trusted them enough to drink what they gave him. Unlike the way some people would act in the town knowing he was on the run.

Work surroundings affecting bahviors

In Fahrenheit 451, Ray Bradbury, portrays that a person’s work surroundings is another one of the many components that affect how the environment shapes our behavior. One example of this being the fact that Montag does not want to go back to work because he is afraid he will get drug back into his old ways of burning books along with houses. In Fahrenheit Montag tells Faber “I’m afraid he’ll take me back the way I was. Only a week ago I was pumping a kerosene hose, I thought:God what fun!”(Bradbury 85). His work environment changed his behavior for the worse. Montag believes that if he is there long enough that he will get sucked back into what everyone else thinks is right, burning books. At this point, he doesn’t even trust himself while being at work. Another example of Montag’s work surroundings affecting his behavior is when he first realized burning books and houses was wrong. Montag tells Mildred about how sorry he felt about burning the lady and her books. He then says “It took some man a lifetime maybe to put some of his thoughts down, looking around at the world and life and then I come along in two minutes and boom!it’s all over” (Bradbury 49). He realizes then and there that he was not in the rightful position to be able to burn the ladies books. As seen in Fahrenheit 451, there are many instances where a person’s behavior is affected by their work surroundings.

Forced Surroundings

Forced Surroundings, in today’s world, such as prisons have been affecting how others behave. One example to support this statement is the Stanford Prison Experiment. This experiment is an example that shows the “unexpected effects that can occur when psychological experiments into human nature are performed” (Stanford). Meaning that this experiment was performed in a precise way, and didn’t expect to see this big of an effective outcome. Especially because they had to cut it short because of the effects on the individuals. This experiment is also implying that “systematic abuse and denial of human rights is never far away in any prison facility” (Stanford). This explains that some of these actions used in this experiment will soon be used in prison facilities. The whole point of this experiment was to “ show that prison guards and convicts would tend to slip into predefined roles, behaving in a way that they thought was required, rather than using their own judgment and morals” (Stanford). From the outcome of this experiment, it definitely proves that forced surroundings, like prisons, have a huge affect on human behavior. In prisons, “prisoners and guards may behave in a hostile manner due to the rigid power structure of the social environment in prisons” (McLeod). This quote can support the Stanford Prison Experiment because this tends to happen a lot to both the prisoners and guards in the experiment. In the book, ALCATRAZ, it states that “ Failure to observe rules often brought corporal punishment in the form of whippings and brandings. Military prisoners convicted of desertion received a brand on the hip with the letter D and those convicted of thievery with the letter T”(Barter 33). This kind of brutality relates to some of it inflicted on the prisoners in the experiment as well. All of this research proves the fact that forced surroundings have an affect on people’s behaviors.

Children Behaviors

The surroundings that children are exposed to have been seen to be affecting their behaviors; such as schools, daycares, or even their own homes. For example, in this specific article, the author believes that “ we need greater emphasis on improving the quality of children's environments;” instead of trying to “fix” the children (Zirpoli). Meaning that if the children’s behavior changes are due to negative environments; don’t try to change them, try and change their environment. It is also easier to just change their environment, especially if there are different factors in the environment that are making multiple children’s behaviors change. If they try and fix them individually, it may be different for each individual and will take time, on the other hand they can just change the environment and it will help the children faster and change their behaviors in a positive way. Single Parent Families are one of the surrounding environments that have a huge impact on the child’s behavior. It is said that “children in single-parent families are at increased risk for academic failure; increased likelihood of dropping out of high school or becoming a teen parent; and increased levels of depression, stress, anxiety, and aggression” (Zirpoli). This means that children that are raised with either a single mom or single dad tend to have more life struggles which then affect their behavior as well as their future. In another source, it says “In psychologists’ research, led by Dr. Nicholas Zill, scholars find that problematic relationships between parents often lead to problems in a child’s school and social life, leading to behaviors such as avoiding school” (Verial). This is because when parents respond negatively to their relationships, they often also act with negativity towards their children as well. This is also why it is very important for the parents to think about their actions before displaying them in front of their children. These are the certain environments that the children’s behaviors are getting affected by.

Social Status and Peer Pressure

In today’s society, people have a tendency to have a behavioral change with the surroundings of “popular” people. In an article it is said that “Teens who try to act older than their age might gain popularity early on but are more likely to have problems with drugs and alcohol and engage in serious criminal behavior by their early 20s” (Spector). As this continues to go on, these teens also need to maintain more and more extreme behaviors to keep being seen as “cool.” It continues to go on and say “As the years went on, however, these antics did not correlate to an increase in popularity. In fact, just the opposite happened. The pseudomature behaviors evolved into larger problems and the status of once cool individuals dropped” (Spector). This is saying that when they became older there ways of appearing “cool” didn’t necessarily work the same as they did when they were younger. For example, instead of getting rewarded for doing things considered “popular,” they were getting into more serious acts of criminal behavior. They thought they were still considered “cool” because doing rebellious acts was their go to thing to ensure they were in the popular crowd. Another act of someone changing their behavior to be considered “cool” is peer pressure. Peer pressure is “the direct influence on people by peers, or the effect on an individual who gets encouraged to follow their peers by changing their attitudes, values or behaviors to conform to those of the influencing group or individual” (Peer). In an article it is said that “As you become more independent, your peers naturally play a greater role in your life” (Peer Pressure). In most situations, peer pressure is hard to resist, especially when in the heat of the moment because then your decisions are usually driven by your peers. These are all the reasons to how someone’s behavior can change due to the type of surrounding they are within.

This video displays on how the Stanford Prison Experiment started and how it gradually got to be very dangerous. At first, the experiment was thought to be just a joke. For example, when guards gave the prisoners orders, they would laugh. It all become real for the prisoners when the guards gradually became more strict and were taking it as harsh as they wanted to. The prisoners were challenging the guards authority with multiple rebellions. The guards would then become even more strict because no one was telling them they couldn't. Eventually, the experiment was cut short due to many reasons. One of the major reasons being that it was putting some of the individuals in danger.
