Quotes That Stood Out

"I was born during the second holocaust." -- This stood out because it was the first sentence, the hook of the story. Also, the way that this sentence started the story, gives you a mysterious vibe, allowing you to want to read the story a bit more for background.
"People had told us legends of a time when human beings lived longer. I thought they were just stories." -- This was the second sentence, again, leaving you sort of confused as to what's going on. It's super simple, but it was definitely one of the quotes that stood out more.
"I had never been outside the enclave, of course." -- This stood out a lot because it's stating that these people were basically stuck in their own tiny world with no connection outside of it.
"The cuts were shallow, symbolic." -- This was a quote from a later part in the excerpt, and it was surprising and stood out especially because it was talking about symbolism. It was weird thinking that small cuts in one's forearm could be though of as symbolic and important.

1.) Fear - It was talking about how people in their world only live to age of forty, however the people in their area have only lived to the age of twenty-five. It was said that each year they get older, it adds to the amount of fear they have.
2.) Hope and Despair - In their world, she keep hoping for something better than there really is. She knows that their world is messed up, yet somehow Deuce keeps on attempting to think of the best.
3.) Isolation in groups - It says they people in her area only live for about 25, but some people in other parts of the world live to be forty. This suggest that people have isolated themselves from one another instead of coming together.
4.) Identity - These people don't know their identity. They don't even have a name till the age of sixteen. So how are they going to be able to have their special identity if they don't even get named till more than half their life is up, not forgetting the fact that people don't live very long at all.
5.) Survival - And as common is all other dystonia fiction books, their goal is too survive. This book is no different. Deuce, the main character, tells the story, as repeated in other themes, that people only live for a short lifetime.

The Enclave was known to the people living in there as, "[a] cast in darkness and curling smoke." It was also told that in certain areas, they found pieces of scraps that may have been part of transportation, in which they took shelter in certain circumstances. The walls of the enclave were very old, and the color of the brick used to be a color, but with wear, it turned to more of grayish color.

The rights that were taken away from the people were that they weren't really able to leave the enclave. They were also forced to follow certain rules in the enclave (not listed) or you would be forced to the Topside. Other than that, they don't necessarily give you anymore details on the things they lost. However, we can infer some ideas.

The literary conflict is more of person vs. nature. The is because of the fact that Deuce is attempting to run past death. Life in her society is bad because of the fact that people cannot live that long. Because of this, she is attempting to prove her strength as a huntress, her job that she has been planning for her whole life, however, she will most likely only have a few years to live out her life in her new job. This means that she is sort of battling against the forces of nature because she may die soon.
