On Christmas Eve, the Portuguese eat codfish and on the Christmas
Day some families eat roast turkey. Typical sweets are sponge
cake, king cake, french toast and many more.
After Christmas dinner, some people go to the midnight mass. All the houses have a Christmas tree and a Nativity Scene.

In Portugal we usually make a Nativity scene. For the vast majority of Christians, Christmas means the birth of Jesus. Therefore, we place the crib under the Christmas tree.
 
 A traditional Christmas cake is King Cake: it’s round in shape and with a hole in the middle covered with candied fruit and dried fruit inside. Here are two traditions for Christmas!

normally with your grandparents, cousins and uncles. We hang out a bit, until dinner is ready. 
At dinner we have as the main dish a traditional portuguese recipe
called “Consoada”. This dish takes codfish, cabbage, potatoes and eggs.
As dessert we have sponge cake, cheese, cheesecake, “Natas do céu”, french toasts and many others.
After dinner we hang out until midnight when we start exchanging gifts.
On Christmas Day we start celebrating at lunch time and we eat as main dish roast meat. As dessert we have the same sweets as on Christmas Eve.
By late afternoon everyone goes to their houses.
This is how portuguese people celebrate Christmas!

Today I’m going to talk about some of the Portuguese (and my own family) Christmas traditions.
I usually alternate where I spend Christmas, for example, this year it will be at my house and all my family will be together (hopefully), but last year I spent the Christmas
Eve at one of my grandparents` house and the Christmas day at my other grandparents’.
Christmas is a really special date for me, so I like to decorate every part of my house
and have a big Christmas tree!
In Portugal, at Christmas Eve almost everyone eats codfish, potatoes and cabbage.
Personally, I’m not a fan of this dish, so I usually eat some kind of meat.
One of the things that must be on my family’s Christmas table is roasted chicken. It is a really old family tradition!
For dessert we usually have a cake called “Bolo rei”(it means “king’s cake”), most of my family doesn’t like it, but we always have it. But the best Portuguese Christmas

 In Portugal, “Véspera de Natal” is the Christmas Eve. Codfish is the Portuguese national dish, we always eat it with boiled potatoes and cabbage. In each house, a whole table is dedicated to desserts. The table is composed by King Cake, Sweet Rice, Pudding, French Toast and much more. In my house we open the presents at midnight. 
This is our tradition.

After dinner, people go to church for "Missa do Galo"(midnight mass). After that people return home and open their presents.
The traditional Christmas cake is "Bolo Rei" and is placed in the center of the table.
There is also a version without candied fruit called "Bolo Rainha". Traditionally a broad bean and a gift (a little token) are hidden in the cake. If you get the token you are
allowed to keep it. But if you find the broad bean, you have to pay for next year's  Bolo Rei!
People drink Porto wine, traditional liquors and eat 'azevias' and 'filhós' (Portuguese biscuits and sweets). The celebration lasts until the early hours of the morning!

In Portugal, Christmas is usually celebrated in family, often at the grandparents`home.
The main dish we eat at Chritmas dinner  on this day  is the typical codfish, the octopus or roasted turkey. But what is more common on the tables of the Portuguese families is the cod, which is served boiled, with Portuguese cabbage and potatoes and as a sauce
it is used a simple and good quality olive oil that gives refinement to the dish.
We also have the typical sweets of this time such as the King’s cake ,  aletria, golden slices, filhós, sonhos, etc.
These are some food traditions that remain until today, but  because of the advancement of modern times each family is creating its own Christmas tradition and some things are changing.

The king cake is present on every table at Christmas and symbolizes the gifts offered by the Three Wise Men to the baby Jesus. The crust symbolizes the gold, the dried and crystallized fruits the myrrh and the aroma of the cake the incense.
The first reference of a Christmas tree in Portugal dates back to the 19th century when king consort D. Fernando II decided to have a Christmas tree for his children in the palace and hand out gifts himself dressed as Saint Nicholas. A tradition he brought from his homeland, Germany!

There is a festive atmosphere and the most important moments are
those that revive the spirit of communion.
Traditionally, families meet on the 24th of December, and codfish
with potatoes and  portuguese cabbage are served at the dinner
table, although roast turkey and other meat dishes that were
savored in the following days are also starting to integrate the
menus. For dessert, there is Bolo Rei (King’s cake), filled with
candied fruit or dried fruit, in addition to the delicious traditional

Most families also eat “aletria”!

We always make our Christmas tree on Christmas Eve!
And just so you know, we always open the presents all together at midnight.
