Capoeira is a Brazilian based Martial Art. It holds a highly ranked status within the dance community due to its technical structure. The dance genre focusses on the individuals use of speed and power in addition to the persons leverage of body weight to perform accurate manoeuvres.

In this environment, capoeira was born as a simple method of survival. It was a tool with which an escaped slave, completely unequipped, could survive in the hostile, unknown land and face the hunt of the capitães-do-mato, the armed and mounted colonial agents who were charged with finding and capturing escapees.

Within my investigation I will be focusing on how an individual is perceived within modern society and ageism due to the participant being a member of a capoeira cultural hub.

"The Great Mestres are unanimous in explicitly pointing out the fact that a certain way of “playing” was too widespread, in which the partners don’t interact, but instead play alone, with exaggeratedly wide steps, attacks unleashed absolutely out of context, such as, for example, those “kicking the moon”."

“Some unscrupulous or badly-trained mestres, trying to make a fortune, developed a “methodology” of teaching capoeira in “mass-production” to huge crowds. This has really limited the capoeira of these practitioners, making it very equal, homogenous, repetitive, and lacking in movement and creativity. Also, that type of “game” with explicit aggression and violence abandons or neglects one of the basic historical hallmarks of capoeira’s movement – the disguise of its bellicosity. “

"Sometimes referred to as a martial art, sometimes a dance, and sometimes even a game, capoeira is a unique phenomenon which has caught the world’s attention. It is instantly recognizable thanks to the movements of the performers; they seem to move together and then suddenly attack each other, still keeping in time with the rhythm."

I've found that nowadays in more mainstream establishments young people practice capoeira in the creative form, trying something new and exciting. Older adolescents from a similar social backgrounds practice the martial art and are more willing to understand the cultural side of it and are quizzical as to why it's known as a martial art even though there is no interaction.

However, it seems that those who are born into a society or culture that practice capoeira as part of their heritage, seem to grow up understanding the reasons for the non-violent approach of the art.

Afro-Brazzilian cultures take pride in capoeira and want to protect it as their own, they don't wish for it to be seen as a survival strategy for their ancestors, but to actually be disguised in dance so that its popularity may grow.
