To be very honest, I was just walking around Kinokuniya in Takashimaya. I happened to walk past it and its beautiful book cover piqued my interested. I then picked it up and read the synopsis to see if I would like it. It happened to be my cup of tea so I bought it. So in the end I bought it because of how pretty the cover is and how depressing the title sounded. (I enjoy reading books that absolutely shatter my heart)

Marin decides to run away and ghost everyone in her life after a tragedy struck her, leaving everything behind except for her phone, wallet and a picture of her mother. No one has heard from her, and after months of no contact, Mabel, Marin's best friends decides to visit her, forcing Marin to confront the problem she tried so hard to run away from. This story is shown from Marin's, the main character, perspective. Additionally, this book tends to jump from summer and winter. Summer represents who Marin was before the tragedy, and winter represents the current, doubtful Marin that we know. Because of how Marin tries to reconnect with her best friend Mabel after so many months, you can feel the tension, awkwardness, hesitation and yearning for things to be like how it used, though it can never be the same. This book's main focus is about reconnection and struggles with mental health, teaching the reader about not only why someone would run away, but also how difficult it is to make things just like how it used to be but utterly failing.

As someone who does not really read often (I do enjoy reading though) due to my short attention span, not only did Nina LaCour's plot intrigued me, but also the way her writing manages to encapsulate such complicated emotions with such simple use of language made me unable to put down the book. The way Nina respectfully portrays recovering from trauma, learning to love yourself again, reconnecting with others whom you have lost touch with, and feeling surrounding the decline of one's mental health is rather realistic. This may be biased as I am a sucker for coming-of-age books that show the mental struggles of someone, but I really did enjoy and relate to not only the main character Marin, who was hesitant to opening up to people, and understand Mabel's, Marin's best friend, frustration with Marin not wanting to open up. This book really taught me to sympathise, and perhaps empathise with both sides. Although the plot was a little confusing for me to comprehend at first (due to the constant shifts between the present and past), this book really did shatter my heart and left me wanting to feel as relieved as Marin was in the end. If i could choose a quote that perfectly sums up the emotional rollercoaster I rode while reading this book, it would be "Maybe a love that's different than it used to be, but love all the same. She's telling me it's okay". I love this quote because at this point of time, instead of Mabel reaching out, Marin did it, and was reciprocated by Mabel. At this time, she realised that things will never be the same way as it used to be, and that it is a good thing, because even if it different, the care and love that they have for one another is still there, regardless of form. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves to have their heart strings to be moved, because even though this book may not have made me cry, it left me feeling empty and craving more. Bonus points because I love the way the author writes.

This book is titled "We Are Okay" by Nina LaCour. It is publish by Dutton Books for Young Readers, as a coming-of-age genre book. It talks about the mental health struggles about a girl who seems to struggle to cope after a major tragedy struck her life.

Although I did not like the constant shifts in timeline, I feel like it was still relevant to the story. Knowing me, I would rather not risk doing so. I can apply the author's ability to portray such deep and thoughtful emotions with such simple words, not in a way that tells, but rather shows the emotions.
