He’s told he can lie, he can’t talk about his training, and he can’t ask for release. These rules really surprise him, especially the one about lying, because lying is normally forbidden in the community.

This makes Jonas start to see things differently. He begins to question if other people might lie too, and he starts to feel that the community is hiding something. The rules change his perception and make him realize the community isn’t as perfect as it seemed.
