         <description><![CDATA[<div>I learned in order for a book to be considered for an award, it must be published the year prior from receiving the acknowledgement.  I was always under the assumption that all books (throughout all dates) would be considered, but it's just like the Grammy's: awards are only given to an artist who completed their work during the previous year.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The <strong>John Newbery Medal</strong> (1922-present): Given to the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.<br><br>The <strong>Randolph Caldecott Medal </strong>(1938-present): Given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.<br><br>The <strong>Pura Belpré</strong> <strong>Award</strong> honors the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library.  The award is given to a Latino/a writer and illustrator whose work best portrays the Latino culture.  <br><br><strong>International Literacy Association </strong>has the following awards for literature<strong>:<br>- </strong>Children's Choice (1974), <br>- YA Choice (1986) and <br>- Teacher's Choice (1989)<br><br>The <strong>Wilder Award</strong> was renamed in June 2018 over the racial insensitivity.  The ALA wanted to distance themselves from culturally insensitive portrayals from her books, which condemned the Native American culture.  The name change is now the <strong>Children's Literature Legacy Award</strong>.  <br><br>The Texas Library Association (TLA) hosts the <strong>Texas Bluebonnet Award</strong> which is solely based on student vote from a list of 20 books.  <br><br>*Above information found at www.ala.org/alsc.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>It's important to share what the award is for when it achieves a medal.  I remember growing up and my teacher saying a particular book won an award, but I never knew <em>why</em> it won.  Was is for art? Was is for being culturally diverse? Sharing this information can help kids appreciate literary works for other reasons besides just for the story itself.    </div>]]></description>
