- Many people assumed that print media, specifically books, would decrease in sales as time went on because of the increase in virtual books. However, research surprisingly shows the consumer increase in books especially during the COVID period. The same can't be said for other forms of print media, including physical magazine and newspapers, as research shows a decline in their sales and an increase in their online sales.
- In terms of streaming platforms, market research implies that many consumers prefer watching older tv shows rather than newer content. So that could be a key factor in what streaming platform is the better competitor for their subscribers.
- Research shows that although there has been an increase in people watching newly released films on a streaming service for double the price, many people still enjoy the activity of going to the cinema. This could mean that streaming services could do different release structures for new films so that they could earn more profit for the people who are willing to pay for an earlier release.
- While Facebook is the leading social media platform for being the most used, Gen Z definitely have an impact on Facebook's popularity, as a lot of users moved to other platforms such as TikTok or Instagram.

From the Mintel talk I have learnt a lot about the digital media and how it influences films/tv shows on streaming services. Lots of research can be used to help show what consumers are interested in and how this will further the film/tv industry. I think the way the digital media is developing, shows an increase in online streaming. However, as many people have more initiative to rewatch or binge older tv shows and films, it calls into question where the film industry is heading in terms of creativity and individuality as films might just become quite repetitive. Overall, I found the talk to be quite insightful in general I do think it would've been better for me if I'd learnt more in depth about how consumer habits affect the film and tv industry.

Concept: To take waste potato peelings and turn them into a new material
As population continues to rise, food and waste management is an ever growing problem. An estimate of 1/3 of all food produced ends up as waste. The UK furniture sector uses or incinerates over 140 thousand tonnes of MDF per year.
Chip[s] Board is made using the waste potato peelings from food processing as an alternative to toxic materials including MDF and chipboard. The peelings are collected from manufacturers and put through a few refinement processes before manufacturing them into robust boards. These boards can then be processed into an array of products such as furniture and other applications. Once the product reaches the end of its life span it can then be sent to industrial compost that can become fertiliser. This will help revolutionise the sustainability of flat pack furniture.

Overall, I found the Creative Conscience talk eye opening and insightful. It was interesting to learn about different projects from a range of practices and influences, that positively impact society. These projects have a range of topics from mental health, global warming, sustainability, body image etc. I liked how the talk encouraged me to explore my own passions within my practice so that I could create good change. Although I enjoyed the talk in terms of it's inspirational message, I didn't learn many skills or specific advice that'll aid me in the film industry. It was interesting researching some of the products specifically the Chip[s] Board project.

Poetics and Politics of representation in image making

This talk just discussed the importance of using certain images or symbols and how they indicate a message. Signs need a system of representation to be interpreted. Signs link to a wider societal concept. Things can be perceived differently by different people. The image of Norman Rockwell self portrait for example projects how we all perceive things in different ways. Another example: The traffic light. The concept of the traffic light is created by society to communicate a broader sign: Red means stop, green means go. People contribute some significance and meaning to a sign.

This image by René Magritte invites people to think that what they're looking at, what's been painted is a pipe. But written underneath in French it states 'This is not a pipe'. This is because although it recalls the pipe, it is not the actual pipe, it's just an image/representation of a pipe. Magritte encourages society to take things literally by undermining society's philosophical assumptions about the nature of reality.

In conclusion, it was interesting to learn more about the depths of poetic imagery and how society uses signs to convey different meanings. Learning more about how people understand a variety of concepts. However, I don't feel that this talk was very relevant to my studies and I don't feel like I learnt too much from it that'll impact my future within the film industry.
