How does the author of "The Seventh Man" reveal the narrator's fear?

- The author of the story reveals the narrator's fear by using imagery to show the readers what the narrator was going through and how he handled the situation. To illustrate this picture he tells us about the dream he had; he was "swimming in the ocean... all of a sudden, someone grabs [his] right leg... [ he's being dragged down under the surface. [ He ] sees K's face there." That very dream is the same dream that stayed with the narrator for over 40 years. That dream is also the same dream that prevented him from ever going near water again. This dream ruined the narrator's life.

"Fear is a powerful force that somehow does not allow many people to get what they want in life." - David Schwarts

- The quote above relates to the man because he wasted 40 years of his life since he was so afraid of what he thought would happen to him. He ended up moving "away from [his] hometown for over forty years. [he] never went near that seashore - or any other. [He] was afraid that if [he] did, [his] dream might happen in reality." He also blamed himself not getting married off of his fear too. If he never would have opened his eyes after 40 years, he would still be living in fear, not knowing what kind of life he could have if he were to conquere his fear.

"Fear and Loathing" - Marina and the Diamonds

- This song relates to the story because the lyrics talk about how her heart is empty and how she lives in bitterness. As the song goes on she talks about how she doesn't have to live her life in fear anymore. This relates to the author because in the story the main character lives most of his life in fear and hiding. Later on in his life he realizes he doesn't have to live his life in fear. In the beginning of the story when K. dissipated, the narrator was in such devastation and grief that he did not allow himself to move on or to live a normal life. 40 years later after most of his life has been wasted, he realizes he doesn't have to live in fear at all anymore. He overcame his fears and went back to his hometown and made amends with his past.

In the book the narrator talks about having nightmares after his friend K. was lost. These nightmares would start with him at the beach in the water floating on his back; all of a sudden, " someone grabs [his] right leg. [He] heels an ice- cold grip on [his] ankle... [He's] being dragged down under the surface. [He] sees K.'s face there... [He] tries to scream, but [his] voice will not come. [He] swallows water, and [his] lungs start to fill."
