Quote: "Like Lincoln, I would like to believe the ballot is stronger than the bullet. Then again, he said that before he got shot." Pg.7 Type: Basic
I feel like she is very oddly obsessed with death. Earlier on page 6 she talks about how much she hates the current president, and then she says "Not that i want the current president killed." I feel like it's odd that almost every thing she talks about somehow goes back to death.

Quote: "The egomania required to be president or a presidential assassin makes the two types brothers of sorts" pg.7
Type: Reflection
This comparison shows the readers how Vowell thinks. It sort of directly correlates with the author's purpose as well, introducing a different way of thinking to encourage the interest of historic presidency.

Quote: "After all, if no one had hated Lincoln, there would be no Lincoln memorial to love" pg.17
Type: Interpretation
The author has no problem making her ideas clear straight from the start. It helps the readers know what she thinks and gives them an opinion of her from the very first page of the book. This quote is sort of an eye opener to her deeper reasoning behind her book because it shows her drive to speak about presidential assassinations rather than just all things about her grandfather.

Quote: "Going to Fords theater to watch the play is like going to Hooters for the food." pg.21
Type: Rhetoric
She uses this simile to make people relate to her and make her seem more relateable. Many people now have been to Hooters and know that a lot people do not go there for the food. Why she is comparing to Fords theater i don't understand however because it's not like people that went to the theater knew that the assassination was going to happen. Unless she is talking about reading about Fords theater and it's only well known because of the assassination of Lincoln.

Quote: “Powell ran up the stairs with the bleeding fred on his heels. The two burst into secretary Seward’s room. Powell sliced at Seward with a bowie knife.” pg.31
Type:Evaluation
This shows her creativity in situations. She is writing an intense sort of fast paced scene and the way she writes with choppy sentences and little detail it get the point across.

Quote: “The seward pole is insult comedy..”
pg.38
Type: Basic
I feel like this quote kinda also describes her because she sort of has the same kind of sense of humor. She isn’t the typical funny person that just anyone laughs at, but she still has a sort of sense of humor that only certain people understand.

Quote: “I’m alone out here. Even though the mall is a pretty safe place, ... so i’m feeling a little muggable.”
Type: Interpretation
I feel that she put this in here just to add a detail about herself and maybe be a little relatable. because while malls are safe they can be scary if you’re paranoid, however she doesn’t come off as a person that is scared of much. But, when you are alone in a place you start to think about all of the bad possibilities rather than the good things that could happen.

Quote: “every time I took a five dollar bill out of my wallet I looked at the engraving of lincolns head and couldn’t get the immage of his detached brain out of my head” pg.51
Type: Rant
Sarah vowell is a talented author there is no doubt about that, however when she says stuff like this it is what makes me not like her. She is such a strange woman and her obsession with death and assassinations is not normal or healthy in my opinion. I do not think this makes her a bad writer by any means however, I do not like what she writes about.

Quote: “a lot of house tours are about the thingness of things”
Type: Evaluation
This sentence stood out to me because at first glance and first read it seems to be a grammatical error, however; in reality it’s a well thoughtout sentence thay may seem grammatically incorrect but in actuality she uses it to her advantage.

Quote: “I must look about as healthy as I feel” Pg.69
Type: Basic
I don’t really get the point in putting this into the book and not just this but the whole story about her getting sick. I feel like it has no correlation to the rest of the book.

Quote: “If almighty God gives a man a cowardly pair of legs how can he help their running away with him?” pg.71
Type: Rave
I really like this quote. where she added it in it went really well with the story line and contributed in a perfect way. Definitely one of my favorite quotes so far in the book.

Quote: “ I am standing there reading the plaque and admiring Mudd— Forgiving him.” Pg. 75
Type:Reflection
This shows how she thinks. It seems like one small thing can influence how she feels about thing and what she thinks. She talked about how she hated Mudd and then reads a plaque and “forgives him”.

Quote: “personally, i’m strong minded and literal enough..” pg. 88
Type: Basic
This quote stands out to me because it’s showing who she really is and that she knows exactly how she comes off to people and still doesn’t care. In a way it’s kind of respectable because she knows how she seems but still doesn’t care and calls herself out on it.

Quote: “it’s interesting how, once one edits justifications for violence down to a length suitable for T-shirt slogans, political distinctions between left and right disappear.” Pg.89
Type: Evaluation
The way she words this is interesting because like it’s a relatable quote but I feel like coming from someone who is so controversial no one really sees the truth behind it. It’s Almost funny in a way.

Quote: “About how working here... has affected the way she thinks about her own death and what will happen to her body after she dies.”
Type:Interpretation
I find it funny that so many of her conversations with people go back to death. I also think that its sort of an iffy topic when it comes to asking a person because she may not be good with the topic of death.

Quote: “I see Edwin’s statue almost everyday. He’s so familiar and homey I would almost consider him my mascot...” pg.99
Type:Rhetoric
This has some irony in it because she says that the brother of the guy that assasinated Lincoln is her mascot. That also shows who she is and sort of hints at her obsession with assasinations. Even though some people don’t think she is obsessed, I do.

Quote: “So Robert attempted to have his mother committed to an institution. When she refused, he instigated a nasty public insanity trial” pg.113
Type: Rant
I’m not sure how I feel about this quote. I know that she didn’t say this and its a story about somneone else, but the fact that she put it in her book is a little questionable and makes me wonder why she did.

Quote: “Thankfully, the story of Garfield’s death is more interesting than the story of his life” pg.125
Type: Basic
This is another one of those quotes that makes me question her sanity. All she ever talks about is death and its a little riveting because the reader is left wondering what to think about her because its such an abnormal thing

Quote: “I want you to recollect it” p.129
Type: evaluation
This quote is at the end of all of the Democratic talk and it shows how she feels about politics which shows us who she is in another aspect besides just her fascination with death which is sort of interesting in a way. I also kind of like the way she addresses it.

Quote: “Garfields assasination meant he would miss out on so much” pg. 133
Type: Basic
This is a little contradicting, she talks about assassination throughout the book and then she proceeds to say that his assasination is sad. I think she definitely isn’t very consistent on her thoughts throughout the book.

Quote: “This is important” pg.147
Type: Evaluation
The way she has this written makes an impact on the reader and really gets them thinking. She worded it with three simple words but the impact of those words is crazy because it makes you want to go back and read the part that she is calling important.

Quote: “ I love this sermon as literature because its diabolical lingo is so grim, so harrowing that it’s almost cute.” P.149
Type: Interpretation
The way she words this is really strange because she calls it cute when in reality it’s not really cute. Vowell she also described it as grim and harrowing which is the opposite of cute and contradicts that statement.

Quote: “A homeless man in a soiled blanket reclines on the statue’s base” p.153
Type: Evaluation
This brings a sad tone to the story because you read homeless man and then you see the soiled blanket and it sort of changes the tone of the book for a split second which helps her portray her purpose.

Quote: “That song,... is very Stalwart, which is to say very Conkling, very Grant” p.156
Type: evaluation
Her word choice is very interesting. Some people don’t know what these words mean and for her to put them in her book shows who she expects is reading this book. It makes her story original and her own.

It’s starting to not be as weird but its still not a normal thing for a woman to be obsessed with. It’s still strange.

Quote: “God told him to kill the president” p.169
Type: Rant
I do not like that she says this because God doesn’t tell people to kill people because thou shall not murder is one of the Ten Commandments. He wouldn’t tell someone tho kill another human being whether there was a reason or not and the fact that she says this makes me really mad.

Quote: "I like the presidential history.” P.183
Type: Interpretation
This quote goes along with the entire story line. I respect that aspect about her.

Quote: “ I am not ashamed to tell you, gentlemen, that I went down on my knees and prayed to almighty God for light and guidance.” Pg. 202
Type: rantShe is very clear through out the book that she is not religious yet right here she is on her knees praying, and it is very annoying that is is so inconsistent with everything that she says.
