Of course, there is a different definition, which literally means to NOT be seen, but this definition is different. 
For Conor, he felt invisible  because nobody really understood what he was going through, and everyone acted awkward and apologetic around him. All he wanted was to be considered "normal" so he dealt with invisibility by trying to make himself be seen. 
Temple was not like this. She felt invisible as well, as nobody understood her autism or her work.  So, she dealt with this by trying to prove those people who didn't understand wrong, and do what she loved instead of listen to those who didn't believe in her.

Some people may feel like others will not care about them, or stop caring about them when they explain certain topics. 
For example, in A Monster Calls, conor didnt want to tell anyone for fear of them not treating him as a normal person. 
For temple, she didn't tell anyone because she felt they may not understand her.
