Security: uses password protection to protect user data and programs.

System performance monitoring: monitors overall system health to help improve performance.

Job accounting: keeps track of time and resources used by various tasks and users.

Error detection aids: constantly monitors the system to detect errors and prevent malfunctioning of a computer system.

Coordination between other programs and users: coordinates and assigns interpreters, compilers, assemblers and other programs to different users.

Memory management: manages the main memory, which consists of a large array of bytes or words where each byte or word is assigned a specific address. Main memory is fast storage and can be accessed directly by the CPU.

Processor management: decides the order in which processes access the processor and how much processing time each process has.

Device management: manages the communication of devices through their respective drivers. It keeps track of all devices connected to the system. Designates a program responsible for each device known as an I/O controller. It decides which process has access to a given device and for how long. Assigns devices effectively and efficiently. Deassigns devices when they are no longer needed.

File management: is organized into directories for efficient or easy navigation and use.
