1. Brown v. Board of Education

I chose this as number one because this is arguably one of the most important cases in history for American education. I believe this because it established that racial segregation in schools is deemed as unconstitutional, which was the first step to solve this issue. Although there was still a lot of racism prevalent during this time and outrage in response to this case, it was important that there is a federal law that recognized the importance of students not being discriminated or segregated against because of the color of their skin. Thus, it promotes that everyone should be seen as equal and receive equal opportunities to an education as well.

5. No Child Left Behind Act

I chose this as second because I think this act is important in advocating for students who have certain disadvantages to have the opportunity to be seen as the same and be provided the same opportunities regular students would have as well. Moreover, it ensures safety to students who don't necessarily have the means to support themself and thus, they don't have to feel as left out because the government is able to fund and tend to their needs. By keeping teachers and administrators accountable for the way students perform, it helps the student desire to perform better as well. The teacher's interest and engagement has a huge influence in how students perceive school and about what they learn in school. Therefore, it can improve test scores for students who typically are behind in school and schools are able to report this data. Essentially, it is relevant in our school education system today and has been helpful in aiding those who are minorities and are placed at a disadvantage.

2. Plessy v. Ferguson

I would choose this second, behind the Brown v. Board of Education because it is still one of the most infamous cases that is talked about in American history and in regards to American education. Moreover, I thought that this really helped push towards the Brown v. Board of Education, which advocates for racial segregation to be abolished. Thus, the Plessy v. Ferguson case is crucial in aiding the Brown v. Board of Education case to occur because although it ruled that "separate but equal" facilities were allowed, it influenced people to act on this unfair, discriminatory establishment. The court essentially saw the segregation as not discriminatory; therefore, people were angered by this judgement and eventually fought for the abolishment of racial segregation in schools.

3. The Common School

I chose this as third because public education in general is such a privilege we Americans get to experience and has been tremendously helpful to families who cannot afford private education. Moreover, I learned that in the colonial period, private education only permitted middle and upper class families to receive an education; thus, it outcasted those who could not afford an education. I am proud that I am living in this country, which allows free public education and provides opportunities for those who cannot necessarily afford private education. Primarily, I think that having access to an education is a privilege, but I think it's a right because people should be allowed to be educated and learn about various topics they would not be able to learn without access to an education. Also, it helps shape and challenge our intellectual minds instead of permitting us to remain in our comfortableness.

4. The Public High School

I chose this as fourth, after the common school because it doesn't restrict lower-income families from having access to education, but I think more specifically, having the public high school allows more opportunities for these lower-income families. Furthermore, it allows them to have hope for a future in terms of having the opportunity to go to college and preparing for a long-term career. In addition, it gets students to explore possible areas of interest that could transform into a future career. Another way the public high school has made an influential impact is that it gives students the option to try new things they would not try before. For instance, they are not just restricted to learning about various school subjects, but also encouraged to be physically active by being involved in sports or by being involved in leadership by being apart of a student body.
