We only do LinkedIn and Youtube. LinkedIn we reach people, but we are not expanding our audience beyond professional connections. Our challenge is that we don't have the resources or content for channels prefered by youth or the general public. We often have one person managing these platforms for 3 projects.

I'm on an organisational social media committee. I run campaigns over the full range of platforms to publicise new research articles and things like international days. I also manage our LinkedIn account (53K followers) and newsletter (25K subscribers). Recently started a 'Thought Leader' series for our Research Heads of Department with video/longform article. Also goes out on our other platforms but was designed for LinkedIn first.

Ethical practise in the current social media climate

The social media climate has changed so much over the last 5-6 years. Many platforms have been bought by mega corporations or unethical billionaires who are the benefiting from the use of these platforms.

I think of platforms like X which is owned by Elon Musk and is increasingly dominated by bots or foreign accounts that rage-bait for profit. Do you think there is still an ethical way to promote science education and social improvement through platforms like these?

I wonder if sometimes our ressources would be better spent on having scienctists being more active as commentators - for example on fake news /wrong & misleading content- other than developping their own channels and communities (which often isn't working)...

Social media makes people feel connected while isolating them from people in the real world. I think of how algorithms can send people further down alt-right, "red pill" or conspiracy theory pipelines which can alienate them from their families and friends. Also all the children and teens who emulate influencers and trends rather than bonding with their peers in real life.

Regarding the „objective“ science point of view of rebecca - I think this is a simplification for our standpoint. I don’t think this is true for science communication, we have an agenda as well, we want to engage the public so we need to cause an emotional response.
