The Communication Catastrophe of the Century by

Valerie Rye and Rydra Wong. Two very important characters/protagonists in both of these stories living in two very different world's/society's. There are many differences between these two dystopian worlds, and these differences could be potentially detrimental to our protagonists if their roles were somehow switched. This timeline will explore that concept and theorize how Rye and Rydra would handle these situations - if they were able to at all. Both women are extremely intelligent and knowledgeable, and have found ways to work with the system and grow accustomed to their new lifestyles.

Rydra discovers the language that these post-pandemic citizens speak- or, well, attempt to portray with gestures and sounds.

Compared to the society that Rydra lives in where everything is technologically advanced and people can speak with a certain sense of normalcy (not counting Babel-17 of course, as we know that language practically has a mind of its own at this point), most of the citizens in this post-pandemic society have a variety of different ways that they communicate. This is all based off of how impaired they became after the illness ran its course, with everyone being affected differently (in terms of whether their impairment was primarily visual or auditory). Rydra would likely be perturbed by all of this, but considering how intelligent she is, she would probably catch on rather quickly and adjust to these fluctuating conditions.

The moment that Rydra finds herself in post-catastrophic Los Angeles, she will likely find herself to be extremely confused. This future is much different from the one that she had come from. It was far less technologically advanced, to say the very least, and the landscape itself seemed much more desolate.

To be honest, it's a bit hard to tell how Rydra would perceive Obsidian (considering his inability to speak or comprehend/understand spoken language), but his overall intelligence wasn't very low. He did save Rye from the bus situation after all, and kept her company until his untimely demise. Rydra would likely want to learn more about this strange way of communication that everyone shares, and how it varies from person to person. Obsidian would be her best bet for this, although it would certainly be a bit difficult due to the limited amount of communication that can take place.

As soon as Rye is put into Delaney's future galaxy, she's truly in for a completely "out of this world" experience. Unlike her world, which is still primarily on the Earth despite it being a rather dystopian society, she'll be put into space and exposed to many advanced technologies beyond her greatest belief. Would she be able to get accustomed to this change? Probably not, and if so, it would most certainly take her a long time due to her impairments and overall non-confrontational nature.

Rye's biggest impairment is that she can no longer read or write English like she used to, which is sad when you think about the fact that she used to be a teacher and freelance writer. If I were her, I certainly would not have lasted as long as she did. With her impairments, she is already at a huge disadvantage and it would take her a very long time before she would be able to actually read and write in the English language again. Babel-17 is something she might also have to slightly accustom herself to, but its lack of phonetics will most certainly only confuse her in the end.

This video about Phonetics by Crash Course is a very good resource for learning about the phonetics in a given language - oh boy, wouldn't that ever be helpful for both of our protagonists?

Rye meets General Forester.

Considering Rye's personality, she would likely feel a bit intimidated and wary of General Forester. Anyone of a higher rank or power in general might perturb her, or anyone from her original world as stated by Rye herself when she said, "The bearded man stood still, made no sound, refused to respond to clearly obscene gestures. The least impaired people tended to do this—stand back unless they were physically threatened and let those with less control scream and jump around. It was as though they felt it beneath them to be as touchy as the less comprehending. This was an attitude of superiority, and that was the way people like the bus driver perceived it. Such “superiority” was frequently
punished by beatings, even by death." This makes me feel as if she would not get along very well with the General, especially when you consider how he's also perceived by everyone else (i.e. not very good).
