Intestinal disorder outbreak

In the past, there have been outbreaks of serious intestinal disorders in the Everglades. One outbreak killed a six-year-old Miccosukkee girl and left nearly 30 others in hospitals and clinics. The cause of the outbreak was not identified. As a precautionary measure, the park has shut down the public drinking facilities until further notice at the Tamiami Ranger Station and Shark Valley Visitor Center.

When most people think of the Everglades facts they remember, they imagine swampland and trips down the water on Everglades boat tours, murky waters. While that’s true, there’s also a very distinctive dry season where weather patterns create drought-like conditions that are perfect for fire. What many people don’t realize is that fire is actually an essential part of maintenance, clearing the way for a complex system of interdependent ecosystems to thrive. National Park Service has an entire handbook on monitoring fires, so don’t worry.

Crocs are mostly found in small numbers in coastal areas of the ‘Glades, while alligators prefer to stay inland, near freshwater. Nevertheless, Everglades National Park protects a natural habitat for both, and it’s the only place in the world where these reptiles co-exist in the wild.

José Mellado

In everglades there live the protective specie of the west indian manatee, this aquatic mammal (also know as sea cow for eating plants) lives in the flamingo area.

In May of 2017, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced the downlisting of the manatee from endangered to threatened. The downlisting comes after diverse conservation efforts and collaborations by Florida and other manatee states, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Caribbean nations, public and private organizations and citizens, resulting in notable increases in manatee populations and improvements in its habitat.

Although the downlisting represents a milestone for the manatee, important challenges still remain to ensuring the species’ long-term future throughout its range. Accidental collisions with boats are the primary cause of death for these inhabitants of shallow waters, followed by low reproductive rates and a decline in suitable habitat.
