The gay rights movement in the United States has seen huge progress in the last century, and especially the last two decades. Laws prohibiting homosexual activity have been struck down; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals can now serve openly in the military. And same-sex couples can now legally get married and adopt children in all 50 states.

They found ways to organize and lead for a more just and equal society, not just for themselves, but for all people. When discussing Black women’s leadership and organizing efforts during the African American Civil Rights movement it becomes clear how often their contributions are overlooked.

Equal Rights Amendment

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), first proposed in 1923, is an amendment to the United States Constitution that guarantees equality of rights under the law for all persons regardless of sex. As of January 27, 2020, the ERA has satisfied the requirements of Article V of the Constitution for ratification (passage by two-thirds of each house of Congress and approval by three-fourths of the states).

Leading constitutional scholars agree that the ERA is now part of the Constitution.

National Women Organization (NOW)

The National Organization for Women (NOW), formed in October 1966, lost no time pressing President Johnson to realize the promise of equal employment opportunity for women in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The disabilities, contribute significantly to sports and politics. The National Organization for Women is the largest organization of feminist grassroots activists in the United States.
