Literary Minimalism

Hemingway was one of the earliest innovators in terms of this style of writing. Don’t confuse it with one of the elements of Modernism. As we will see below, it is still employed today.

What makes something minimalist?

Characterized by an economy of words. The easy answer is that it is short. But we can also have short works and works that use few words to get their points across that we would not characterize as minimalism.

What else should we look for, then?

Context often dictates the meaning. The reader is a “fly on the wall” of sorts, listening in to the conversations and watching the action unfold. Rarely do we drop into the thoughts of a character, even when the point of view is limited to that character.

Why would writers do this?

Readers are meant to take an active role in the story. It is our job to figure out what motivates the character. We must infer the deeper meaning of the story from what we are given. Think Picasso, when considering our role in what is going on underneath–the essence of the work.

Iceberg Theory! 90% unseen.

Tendencies:

1. Characters are unexceptional, at least in the traditional heroic sense.
2. Stories tend to be slice-of-life
3. Objective p.o.v.

If a writer of prose knows enough of what he is writing about, he may omit things that he knows and the reader, if the writer is writing truly enough, will have a feeling of those things as strongly as though the writer had stated them. The dignity of movement of an iceberg is due to only one-eighth of it being above water. A writer who omits things because he does not know them only makes hollow places in his writing.

Walking back to my desk, I heard the fan.
Here, the emotion of yearning has been toned down to almost nothing as the character simply 'takes a break'. Turning on the fan can be written as 'hearing the fan'. This relies on the reader's sense of logic, as hearing the fan will be related to it being turned on.
