The speaker appears to be Lil Wayne. The occasion of the song seems to be in response to Lil Wayne's dad abandoning his family. His parents divorced when he was two years old. After that his dad was never present in his life ("Lil Wayne"). The audience of the song is Lil Wayne's father. The purpose of the song is to show his dad that he is different from him. from his dad. He also wants to show that he is angry that his dad was never present in his life. Another element of the within the lyrics includes Lil wayne's past experiences with drugs. His lyrics and video demonstrate a serious and angry tone.

The appeal to ethos in the song mainly expresses his experiences with drugs and life decisions.

Ethos - In lines 3 and 4 Lil Wayne states "But you think that you are on your way life line up don't blow it." He is talking about cocaine when he says the word blow and it is usually in a line when someone is about to use it. So he is saying that life is on the line, and if someone is to do cocaine it will be harmful to their life. He could also be talking about how he has had bad drug experiences and they have messed up his life. So he could be trying to warn people that drugs can and will cause harm to you and those around you. Then in the second verse line 5 and 7 ethos is used again."I see the guilt beneath the shame." He is saying that he has felt shameful for some of the things that he has done in the past, and beneath that shame he feels guilt, and he wishes that he could change his past decisions. Line 7 he states "I see the scars that remain." I believe he is saying that as a person who has messed up in life he has tried to fix wrongdoing. But there are still scars from the things he has tried to mend together. His past is like a wound that isn't completely healed.

Lil Wayne uses ethos in this song to state his past experiences, and those who feel guilty about their past can relate to his authoritative and famous figure.

The appeal to pathos in the song is mainly explaining his relationship with his dad.

Pathos - In verse three lines 1 and 2 he states "Looking at my past, Damn I look just like my Fucking dad." He is stating that his dad was never in his past and he shows a serious and angry tone towards him. By stating that he looks like his dad he shows that he does not want to be anything like his dad. He wants to be different from him and he wants to be involved with his family. Then in verse three line he says "I see my mama smile, that's a blessing." He is saying that he is grateful to have his mom involved in his life. He is also stating that he is lucky to have a mom who is proud of her child. The chorus of the song lines 1 and 2 he says "Mirror on the wall here we are again, through my rise and fall, you've been my only friend." He states that he has been alone, and at times the only thing he has had is himself.

LIl wayne uses multiple appeals to effectively show that he doesn't want to be like his dad and that he is angry at him for never being involved in his life. His lyrics demonstrated that he did not want to be anything like his dad, and his video demonstrated the anger and emotion he has toward his father. Overall, Lil wayne effectively used ethos and pathos to demonstrate his anger towards his dad.
