The natives showed the Spanish how to smoke pipes and they also allowed them to eat some of their food, the Spanish took their food and ate up their saved food for the harsh winter

The Spanish tribe captured the natives to help them look for gold, but they didn't find any gold so they moved on to looking for ships. While on the ship that had more materials and food looking for other ships. When around them the sicknesses easily traveled into the Spanish tribe's bodies and killed lots of their men. 
Before the Spanish never came into contact with the disease the native has they were not prepared to fight off the disease.
