We focused on this chapter because it contains the climax of the study. Our main character has won the writing contest in the chapter but is also exposed for his piece not being an original work.
- We discussed the narrator and if we supported his actions or did not. We know the narrator’s personal story but he also chose to be dishonest in order to win and meet Ernest Hemingway. The narrator’s superiors add that Hemingway will most likely be embarrassed that the winner often contest was a fake.
- We discussed the relationship between the narrator and Mr. Ramsey. The narrator is particularly close to Mr.Ramsey and even in the narrator’s faults, Mr.Ramsey continues to give him advice.
- We discuss the affair between Bill and Mrs.Ramsey. This situation in particular is interesting because the narrator found out about this affair by reading Bill’s journal. However, the narrator suspects that Mr.Ramsey is already aware of this affair.
-The last discussion we had was about the conflict between Bill and the narrator. Bill is frustrated with the narrator because he feels like narrator’s story was his story to tell. Bill argues that he should have been the one to represent life as a Jewish person. Our group likes the narrator because he understands Bill’s frustration and tries to talk to him but Bill is unavailable.

These last couple weeks have hectic so it was good to reconnect on the book.
2. This meeting was interesting because there was some discourse among members at times. Patrick and Joseph sided with the narrator while Brady and Noah sided against him. This made for some good discussions.
3. For our final meeting we should be more prepared. While this meeting was good, it was unorganized as people were just sharing thoughts rather then dividing our discussion into sections.

When Henry David Therou was interviewed along with the rest of the guest speakers say that experience is the best teacher. Of course our narrator then goes out to gain some experience for himself and submits one of his new works to the school literary magazine. He then gets kicked out of his school since he was accused of plagiarism. This could have possibly been the biggest mistake of his life, but it would also open up many doors for him in the future and to his eventually success in literature. In the end he learned from his mistakes and experiences which helped him succeed.
- Brady brought up a good point and that is the ending of the book is very ironic since the narrator was kicked out f his school for plagiarism, but that very school that kicked him out was the same school he invited to be a guest speaker for their students. Even though he failed in his old school but in a way he did succeed in it since it recognising him as one the greatest writers of their time period.
-Every one in our group seemed to realy like the book but we all do agree that it times it was very slow and hard to follow. Though that doesn't mean we wouldn’t recommend it to other people as a matter of fact the incoming freshmen should have to read this book since it tells them many things such as identity and learning from their mistakes that could actually help out a lot with their first year at Chaminade.

Section/Pages:
1-50
Members Present:
Patrick Carrol
Joseph Griffin

Discussion Highlights:
- We have come to the conclusion that two major themes that we will be seeing through out his book are belonging and literature. Firstly, the narrator literally states that the prep school is “ a play of literature” so it is quite obvious that we will be seeing that theme many times throughout the book in different ways. Now the reason why belonging is going to be a major theme is because the narrator sticks out like a soar thumb. They aren’t wealthy like the rest of the student body they are a part of the middle class and got in from a scholarship . Secondly the prep school the narrator attends is a catholic school, yes the narrator is a practicing catholic but they still have a very strong Jewish background. We believe that through out the course of the book the narrator will struggle with their identity and try to overcome that obstacle.
-Now we think that the narrator is unnamed because the author doesn’t want to associate them with a name in order to allow the reader to really imagine themselves to be in the narrators position. This could because many people struggle with such problems and Wolff doesn’t want to strip those people of their identity.
- It obvious that we instantly have ties to the main character because all of us are currently attending a semi-wealthy catholic private/pre-school in New England. Though not all of us struggle with the same troubles as the main character some defiantly do.

In the fall of 1960, the unnamed narrator is in his final year at an elite New England prep school for boys. The narrator hides details about his life from his classmates, most notably that he’s middle-class and has Jewish heritage. He loves to write stories, many of which make his home life back in Seattle seem more exciting than it is. The school has a tradition of hosting famous literary figures, and the senior students submit poems and stories for literary competitions; one boy is then selected to have a private audience with the writer. The is excited to participate.
