The Byeri Reliquary

Eyema-O-Byeri was affected by European colonialism because the figure, which is called Byeri, that was attached to the container preserving the relics of the Fang, who live in Gabon, has been altered a lot by European dealers in order to appeal to collectors since at that time, the French colonizers wanted to destroy the Byeri because they thought that it was a threat to Christianity due to the Fang's Catholic culture then. Thus, in order to preserve the relics in the container, the Fang sold the Byeri to the French. That is the reason why the Byeri which has not been destoried looked very different from the original Byeri that is on the container.

I think it is important to plot this image on the map because it shows French colonizers in Africa have an impact on the work of art in Gabon, affecting its appearance just to make it become more like a sculpture for art to trade but not for the local custom to preserve.

Nkisi Nkondi is influenced by European colonialism because it was created by people in Congo to be a system for locals to deal with the inaccessible Belgian law set by Belgian colonizers. Nkisi Nkondi is invented because of the colonialism from Belgium, becoming an important figure for locals in their society to remain justice.

It is a significant work of art to be put on the map because the existence of Nkisi Nkondi reveals that European colonialism in Africa can shape a work of art and its meaning for people in Congo at that time.

Lidded Saltcellar is an essential work of art to understand that European colonialism in Arica is driven by the international trade between Africa and Europe. During then, works of ivory are popular in Europe. In addition, in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, ivory saltcellars were commonly used on European nobilities' dining tables. Therefore, many works of art in Europe then were from Sierra Leone including Lidded Saltcellar, which increased the trade between Europe and Africa, leading to future European colonialism in Africa.

I chose to put this work of art on the map because most of the ivory works in Europe in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries are from the west coast of Africa, where Sierra Leone is located. Lidded Saltcellar is created under this background with the detailed design by an artist working in Sierra Leone.

Great Mosque of Kairouan

The Great Mosque of Kairouan was affected by European colonialism because the columns are from different Roman temples and Byzantine churches during the colonialism from the Roman and Byzantine empires. Therefore, the Islamic architecture of this mosque is not only a piece of artwork but also the combination of the elements and the culture from the architecture of Rome and Byzantium. The Great Mosque of Kairouan depicts Islamic victory and shows respect toward the buildings from Rome and Byzantine colonialism.

The reason why I put this image on the map is because that there are many cultures from various colonialisms in Tunisia. For example, the colonialism of Rome, Byzantine and Islamic empires. The Great Mosque of Kairouan contains Islamic, Roman and Byzantine architecture, which reflects the abundant cultures in Tunisia.

Woven and Cut-pile Textile

Woven and Cut-pile is a luxurious textile for the royals because of the high quality of the cloths consist of the textile. Woven and Cut-pile shows the trade between Europe and Africa could be increased by the production of the textile that is made of palm fibres, which was highly praised by the European in the sixteenth century, leading the later European colonialism in Kongo.

I selected this work of art to be placed on the map because the textile is one of the attractions for the European to take over Kongo for trading and that it also reveals the geographical importance of the capital city M’banza Kongo, where the centre trade network is, for the European.
