In our reading “White Fragility” this part stuck out for me: “For many white people, a single required multicultural educational course taken in college, or required “cultural competency training” in their workplace, is the only time they my encounter a direct and sustained challenge to their racial understandings.” For me, this made me want to understand what a teacher activist would be and should do. Teachers are very influential in the lives of their students, families, and schools. I related to this quote from “White Fragility” because sometimes I have wondered if too much time in the education program was devoted to multiculturalism. I was comparing my education experience to my friends who have attended other colleges and only spent “a single required multicultural educational course” learning about multiculturalism. After taking the diversity course last semester and reading this article, amongst many others, I have realized how important of a responsibility it is as a teacher to really immerse themself into different cultures in order to be an activist for their students. They really need to understand different cultures on a deep level in order to relate to and reach their students.
