In many cases keeping wolves in captivity, can lead to them showing signs of stereotypical behaviours such as pacing or circling. It's thought they do this when they can't exhibit natural behaviour patterns, or it could be repeated efforts to deal with some issue.

This could be prevented by providing them with sensory enrichment, like hiding pieces of their food around the enclosure so they have to use their sense of smell to find it. Another way they could present their food could be tying it to a tree or hiding it underground, so they have to dig it out.

The sensory enrichment will encourage them to exhibit natural behaviours they would in the wild, like hunting. Hiding their food means they have to work for it and it gives them something to do. This means they are less likely to be pacing and circling their enclosure, if they're more occupied with searching for food.
