Elevators make about 18 billion passenger trips a year, which results in an average of 27 deaths annually in the US. If you ever happen to be one of those people caught in a falling elevator, here's a tip; don't jump. Many people believe that jumping will lessen your impact when the elevator hits the ground, but it's actually the opposite. Unless you jump at just the right time, you can be putting yourself in even greater danger. Too soon and you'll hit the ground from higher up with a harder impact. Too late and you'll hit your head on the ceiling and end up with many more risks. The right time to jump is when you are just about to hit the ground, which has a low chance of lessening your impact. So unless you are a rocket scientist that can calculate the amount of time a 1200 KG elevator plus however much you weigh will take to fall from whatever floor you are on, you should probably just stick to the stairs.

An ancient Japanese legend promises that anyone who folds a thousand paper cranes will be granted a wish from the gods, along with happiness and eternal good luck such as long life or recovery from illness or injury. It is believed that they must be folded in one year, and that they all must be folded by the person who hopes for their wish to come true. One well known story of this not only in Japan but worldwide is the story of Sadako Sasaki. She was exposed to radiation from the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during WWII at the age of two, and soon developed leukemia. At the age of twelve she began folding the cranes. A fictionalized version of her story as told in Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes states that she only folded 644 cranes before she became too weak to fold any more and died, her family and classmates finishing the final 356 cranes. Her family says that in reality she actually was able to fold 1,000 cranes, and after her wish did not come true she continued to fold even more. She died on October 25, 1955, and a statue of her holding a crane was built in Hiroshima Peace Park.
