Embarrassment or discomfort in certain situations are not necessarily a sign of being anti-social, especially in children. Well-being in social situations depends on personality traits and life experiences. Some people are naturally reserved, while others are more open-minded. Unlike everyday nervousness, anti-social relations involve fear, and avoidance that interfere with relationships, daily life, work, school, or other activities. Some of the emotional and behavioral symptoms include worry about embarrassing yourself, intense fear of interacting or talking to others/strangers, anxiety in anticipation of a feared activity or event, depression, and expecting the worst possible consequence from a negative experience during a social situation. Physical symptoms include blushing, trembling, sweating, muscle tension, and feeling that your mind has gone blank.

There are many ways one can become anti-social, but it is most likely to be developed from a complex interplay of biological and environmental factors. Examples of some causes are inherited traits, brain structure, and environment. Believe it or not, this can be passed down through generations! Although, medical professionals do not know how much of it may be due to genetics and how much is learned behaviour. Brain structure plays a role because there is a structure in your brain called the amygdala and this controls your response to fear. In result, some people may have an overactive amygdala which results in a heightened fear response (resulting in anxiety in social matters). Lastly, the environment you are raised in has a major role in being anti-social because of learned behaviour. Some people might develop this after experiencing an unpleasant or embarrassing situation, and you are more likely to develop this if one or both of your parents model anxious behaviour or are extremely controlling and overprotective over you.

If this is left untreated, being anti-social could potentially rule over your life. Anxieties can control your work, school, relationships, and enjoyment of life. More possible drawbacks that could occur are low-self esteem, trouble being assertive, negative self-talk, poor social skills, isolation, substance abuse, suicide and/or suicide attempts.

While there is no way to predict what will cause someone to develop an anxiety disorder, there are steps you can take to lessen the effects of your symptoms such as keeping a journal, setting priorities in your life, and avoiding unhealthy substance use. Keeping a journal can help you identify your self identity and what keeps stressing you out. Setting priorities can help by managing your time and energy on activities that genuinely make you happy and relaxed. Finally, avoiding alcohol and drugs can reduce or get rid of the anxiousness going on inside your head.

A way this applies to future learning experiences is knowing ways to deal with this can help people manage giving a presentation to a large crowd. Another way this can be applied is talking or interacting with people they aren't comfortable with whenever there is a group project.
