Rockefeller was born in Moravia, New York on July 8, 1839. At fourteen Rockefeller and his family moved to Cleveland Ohio, where he participated in many small business opportunities. By 1870 Rockefeller had gained much economic success and incorporated the Standard Oil Company. The Standard Oil Company became the leading company of the oil industry in America. Essentially Rockefeller helped to establish the first American monopoly.  In 1890 Congress passed Sherman Antitrust Act due to the Standard Oil Company's dominance over the American Oil company.  Eventually Rockefeller had to disassemble the company and allow each property to be run by different people,still keeping with the hierarchy control. Rockefeller is well known and respected for his work to assist numerous charities.  He donated money to charities such as Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial, University of Chicago (in which he helped to establish) and the General Education Board, and many churches. His theory was "to solve the problem of giving money away without making paupers of those who receive it" and throughout his life he donated $530,853,632.

Rockefeller was able form a monopoly by taking advantage of the rarity of oil and the revenue produced from it.

Rockefeller entered into the Oil industry by 1863, investing in a Cleveland Ohio refinery.  He then went on to establish the Standard Oil Company which later controlled ninety percent of the U.S oil and refinery industry.  He was very focused on efficiency and worked to control the oil refineries.  Rockefeller’s understanding on refineries allowed him to be ahead of his competitors.  With his valuable insight on oil and refineries he was able to establish a successful company and went on to make a vast fortune.

In an attempt to takeover as many oil refineries he could he used hardball tactics to accomplish his goal. In 1874 the Standard Oil Company obtained new oil pipelines which helped his company to block oil from reaching other competing refineries. His company also bought up land that was essential to other companies, so that its competitors had no way of building their own pipelines.  He also bribed legislators.  These tactics helped Rockefeller and his company to take ownership of nearly all the oil pipelines in the
