A person with HIV disease can be asymptomatic during the early stage of the disease and appear healthy while living with HIV. The disease progresses in stages. As the HIV virus slowly weakens the body’s immune system, a variety of symptoms and limitations can develop. AZT-Drug often used to slow the effects of HIV.

Abstinence- refraining from all types of sexual intercourse, (anal, oral, and vaginal).

Antibodies- substances in the blood that helps the immune system fight infections.

Bisexual- A person who  prefers sexual intercourse with  both men and women.

Communicable Disease- a disease that can be passed from person to person, caused by bacteria, viruses, and other organisms.

Condom- Covering for the penis, which should be made of latex to protect against HIV
Hemophilia- a heredity clotting disorder characterized by excessive, sometimes spontaneous bleeding.

Most commonly, people get or transmit HIV through sexual behaviors and needle or syringe use.
HIV is not spread easily. Only certain body fluids from a person who has HIV can transmit HIV:
  • Blood
  • Semen (cum)
  • Pre-seminal fluid (pre-cum)
  • Rectal fluids
  • Vaginal fluids
  • Breast milk
These body fluids must come into contact with a mucous membrane or damaged tissue or be directly injected into your bloodstream (by a needle or syringe) for transmission to occur. Mucous membranes are found inside the rectum, vagina, penis, and mouth.

Kaposi's Sarcoma-a rare form of skin cancer which is common to persons with AIDS.

Pneumocystis Carinii Pneumonia - a severe lung infection commonly seen in AIDS patients.

Retroviral Drug- Drug such as AZT used to slow the growth of HIV.
 
Safer Sex- Sex using a latex Condom.

Sexually Transmitted Disease- are caused by infections that are passed from one person to another during sexual contact.

The Principal of the school is usually responsible for placement of the student.  

The school nurse will evaluate if the student is susceptible to significant medical risk infections, and will make proper determinations regarding student's health and the public school environment.

If it's determined that there's a significant risk of infection within the school setting, then the student's will be evaluated to incorporate an IEP.  

 If the student with HIV qualifies for services as a child with disabilities under state and federal law, those procedures will be used to make a placement decision in lieu of the procedure described above. In the development of an individualized educational program (IEP), school personnel should consider expanding the staffing committee to include the student's physician and a public health official to serve in an advisory capacity.

It guarantees equal opportunity for individuals with disabilities in public accommodations, employment, transportation, State and local government services, and telecommunications.

A public school system may not prohibit a child with HIV or AIDS from attending elementary school.

Most students with HIV attend general education courses, unless they have a specific emotional, or intellectual disabilities.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 insure that all qualified persons have equal access to education regardless of the presence of any disability.
Students can have medical interventions, and educational accommodations if the disease has progressed, and affects activities for daily living.

Arrange the classroom to increase accessibility  ( making sure you understand the 504, if the student has one.  Advise with key professionals for practices and arrangements that need to be made.  Health care plan, classroom temperatures to accommodate physical and health needs.
