This is saying that something bad happened on the trail which could possibly be the tragedy that keeps being brought up. Whatever happened on the trail obviously wasn't good and he didn't want to think of it. It kept coming to his head which means it had to be important to either him, Irving, or people he knew.

He feels awful about not letting Daisy in, but he can't take it back, but he does apologize. This proves that Daisy really liked Duncan because she would not go to any random person and ask for major help like in this situation.

My prediction is Tim the main character suffers because of his flaw or his love for Vanessa. Vanessa is his weakness and it makes sense to predict such a thing.

He doesn't know that that might be the problem between them. That Vanessa might like someone else instead of him.

He isn't sure what she would or wouldn't like, so he asks Tim because Tim knows Vanessa better than Patrick does.
