What is the Integration Approach?

The Integrated approach to teaching combines different areas of the curriculum into one.
This method allows teachers to combine studies of two or more subject areas into lessons (Pigdon and Woolley, 1992). Giving students a sense of integration in all areas of education and at times a better understanding of what they are being taught.

Furthermore, integrated teaching and learning has its advantages and disadvantages like all teaching methods. One of the most important aspects of this method is making sure lessons are planned and organised so that all students are able to learn and therefore be assessed fairly.

Why is it Important to Include all Learning Styles for Better Assessment?

When using the integration approach in teaching it is vital to cover all learning styles. This ensures that all students are able learn and build their knowledge on the specific areas being taught.
In addition, incorporating all learning styles will also allow for fair assessment.

Assessment in any form can be difficult for students and for the teachers to plan. Especially with an integrated classroom, where the curriculum is intertwined (e.g. incorporating maths and science into one).
Therefore, teachers need to look at what their students learning styles are, whether they be; visual or verbal (ASCD, 1997).
When students have access to enriching activities that they can learn from, that is when they are able to learn and consume a vast amount of knowledge.

Assessment is rarely a students favourite part about their schooling, but it allows teachers to track their students progress in specific areas.
For teachers, assessment planning for any subject can be an extensive process, but how do teachers effectively assess their students when using the integration approach?

Firstly, there needs to be a balance of ongoing, formative and summative assessments. These assessments are important when using any teaching and learning method, but in particular integrated studies.
The Professional Development Services for Teachers (2017), suggests that effective assessment for integrated learning and teaching is giving students a variety of assessments. Including oral presentations, collaborative assignments and use of media.
A range of different assessments that cover all learning styles, as well as ongoing assessment, where teachers observe and take notes is the key to effective assessment when using the integration approach (The Professional Development Services for Teachers, 2017).
