Performing solo - I am grade 5 at alto saxophone, and most of the repertoire I play is solo.

Performing in a group led by someone else - I am involved in various youth ensembles organised by High Wycombe and Slough music services, as well as choir in my school.

Find a (free) piece of music, with 2-4 parts, from Musescore. I could also ask my instrument teachers for any suitable music they may have.

Find 2-3 other musicians in my school, who can play instruments that match those in the arrangement we will be playing. To encourage equal participation of all members, we should all be at roughly the same musical level.

I will make suitable adjustments to the arrangement depending on the instruments being played, and the skill of their players. For example, giving the violin part to the pianist, or transposing it so that a trumpet player can play it.

We will play the new arrangement, and make any further necessary harmonic adjustments to it. As we will be rehearsing for two months after this, it by not means should be played perfectly yet - the purpose of this session is to find mistakes in the sheet music.

Hold weekly rehearsals, as well as encouraging the ensemble members to practise their individual parts in their own time, to perfect the performance. The structure of rehearsals would depend on the skill of the performers. For example, for some playthroughs, I may need to conduct the group instead of playing to ensure the synchronisation and tempo of the playing remains constant. We may need to rehearse parts without all performers to reinforce certain difficult passages.

Find 2-4 other like-minded ensemble members, who play instruments complementary to the saxophone and each other instruments.

Find a piece of music, recorded in a way everyone can understand (standard notation, tab etc) and wants to play.

Make any necessary adjustments to the above piece of music, and hear the new arrangement performed to ensure the changes are suitable and no mistakes were made.

Establish a rehearsal routine, most likely weekly sessions, that was agreed by all members of the ensemble.

Have an external person oversee one of out rehearsals and act upon their feedback.

Rehearse until the piece is perfect!

Perform our piece to the external person mentioned above, and obtain their response to our performance.
