I did this by looking into the gaming industry, live performances and cinema.  

At the end of the week I have definitely expanded my understanding of different aspects of the music industry and gained experience that can help further my career in the future. I was also musically inspired by all 3 of these events, from making music for my own game environments to creating visual aspects to my tracks. However I feel like I missed out on the collaboration aspect of this unit. We discussed a wide range of areas including lighting, textures, scaling and other game mechanics that make up the basic tools needed to create a realistic environment. Both demand a clear creative vision and draw upon inspiration from the world around us. As with many of his newer albums Kanye hosted a listening party that gave people a chance to preview some of the tracks. The event was held in Miami but also streamed online which is how I watched it. The event is more than just music however, the visual element and the production made the entire event feel like a block buster movie. Hearing the new album has given me a lot of ideas and a whole new sonic landscape to experiment with. This was a deliberate choice for Kanye as he is making a stand against streaming platforms and believes artists should get 100% of the money from their music. Brian Tyler was excited to work on this 5th installment in the franchise.


“I wanted to both acknowledge the history of the amazing score that came before this installment, while also taking the musical landscape into a new world,” says the composer. “There are new themes as well as old-school themes intertwined in a way that I hope does the franchise justice.”

Tyler adds that there is “an emotional component” to the new film that is “an integral dynamic contrast to the terror” within it. “I wanted to reflect this in the score,” he states, “and help make this movie a fully realized experience for the viewer.”

Unfortunately the score for Scream isn't anything groundbreaking but rather leans on common themes in slasher movies and pays homage to the genre. Sickening, high pitch, screaming strings in a chromatic key instantly set the tone and help build tension in the scenes. The fast tempo drums help drive the action sequences and create a sense of looming danger and dread. The orchestral segments of the track for the more emotional scenes accompany the film really well and add depth. Although I enjoyed this score I didn't personally find it that effective in building tension and scaring the audience as it is very stereotypical of its genre. One of my favourite horror scores Hereditary (Colin Stetson) for example, I believe is a much more sonically interesting score. I will continue to go to the cinema for inspiration for my film scores as that is the place they are intended to be played.
