Definición y objetivos

Quantitative research is a scientific method that focuses on collecting and analyzing numerical data to describe, explain, and predict phenomena. Through this approach, the aim is to quantify the study variables and establish relationships between them and Describe phenomena: Identify, classify and quantify the characteristics of a phenomenon or population of interest. For example, determining the prevalence of a disease in a certain region. Explain relationships: Establish relationships between variables and determine the degree to which one variable influences another. For example, analyze the relationship between the level of education and economic income.

Proceso general de la investigación cuantitativa

General process: Statement of the problem: The research question is clearly defined.

Formulation of hypotheses: Possible answers to the problem are established.

Research design: The sample is selected, the variables to be measured are chosen and the data collection instruments are designed (surveys, experiments, etc.). Data collection: Data are obtained through the designed instruments.

Data analysis: Data is processed using statistical software and the results are interpreted.

Presentation of results: The research findings are communicated in a clear and concise manner.

Ventajas y limitaciones

Advantages of Quantitative Research Objectivity: By using numerical data and statistical analysis, the influence of the researcher's personal biases is reduced, providing more objective results. Generalization: Results obtained from a representative sample can be generalized to a larger population. Precision: Quantification of data allows for more precise analyzes and comparison of results between different studies.

Limitations:

Reducing complexity: By transforming reality into numbers, important nuances and details that are not easily quantifiable can be lost. Difficulty in capturing depth: Quantitative research does not usually delve into the reasons behind phenomena, limiting itself to describing the relationships between variables. Rigidity: Quantitative research designs tend to be more rigid and less flexible than qualitative designs.

The study could be replicated in other cultural settings, time periods, or with different groups of participants.

The results can be compared statistically.

Using certain criteria means that quantitative studies can be repeated and then analyzed and compared with similar studies.

With quantitative data analysis, data from large samples can be processed and analyzed using reliable and consistent procedures.

Using formal, established hypothesis testing procedures means carefully considering and reporting study variables, predictors, data collection, and testing methods before drawing conclusions.

This facilitates larger studies that involve more subjects and potentially generalize the results.

Disadvantages:

However, collecting data based solely on quantitative research has some drawbacks. In principle, conclusions are often quite general and some complex issues and their causes may not be fully appreciated. Due to the standardized structure of the survey, the personality of the interviewee is often also not taken into account. Closed questions do not allow detailed and complex answers or suggestions for improvement. Therefore, it is necessary to carefully plan which research method is suitable for the respective field of application.
