in English this means rebirth. It was originally a French word that was used to describe this time from the late 1300 to the 1600s. The people of Europe began to revive art and learning. They believed that for far too long knowledge and learning was being restricted by the Catholic Church. People wanted to study the writings, art, science and philosophy of the Ancient Greeks and Romans and lived the way they did. Also some people began to question the authority of the Church and their faith in God after seeing so much suffering during the Black Death.

It is a belief that people should focus on human potential and achievement.

People should study and assess things based on reasoning and empirical evidence. For example when people started to read scrolls about Philosophy, science, culture, religion and other topics from the Ancient Greeks and Romans, they read them and assessed these writings based on whether or not they made sense. You do not throw a scroll away just because it is something that is written by a person who was not Christian.

People became much more interested in studying the Classics and wanted to learn new things and do things in a different way.

The focus on the potential of the human individual, reason, logic, science and move to secular culture was very radical.
