There were lots of things pulling people there. The problem: It was just too hot. Soon air conditioning was invented. First of all it helped mass produce products and made products super cheap. They also helped consumers get their goods without spending all their money. But there was a big downside. They needed workers to work the conveyor belts. This made millions of children work in factories when they should be learning stuff in school. Most kids did not even know what 3 x 3 is equal to. They only knew how to make goods to make money so they did not starve to death. Since conveyor belts were moving their limbs or other body parts could get stuck and pulled off. Even after this they still had to work until their job was done. Their job was 18 hours a day. They did not even get any shifts or even a lunch break.  Even after all of this hard, dangerous and long work the average pay check was 30 cents a week. This is why everybody in the family worked. Families stopped having children to save them from working like this. If they even a tiny bit wrong or slept late or even complained they would be fired. I mean seriously, freedom of speech is a thing. Exodusters: These used to be slaves but faced discrimination in the East so they went to the Great Plains to take advantage of the homestead act and since they were former slaves they knew a lot about farming.
Drought: This happens when there is a lack of water and rain and it gets really dry
Homestead Act: The homestead act was an act that said if you got some land in the Great Plains and worked on it and built a house on it for 5 years you could own the land. You could also buy the land straight away.
Sodbusters: These busted sod to make good soil to plant crops. They also used sod to build houses. A problem was that bugs lived in the house's walls because the house was made out of sod. Sometimes bugs accidently buried through the wall and fell on to the floor.
Cattle Trail:There were tons of cattle in Texas. Meanwhile in the great plains many people decided not to farm crops because the soil was bad. They looked for other ways and decided to cattle farm. They brought cattle from Texas using cattle trails. The cattle traveled from barn to barn. Sometimes during the night they escaped. Cowboys took care of them as they traveled. If they were startled they might stampede. Being a cow boy was very dangerous. This created the urbanization of the great plains. Many big cities were built from cattle trails.
Barbed Wire: Before people had no Idea who's land was who's. Wooden fences could not be made because of the lack of trees. This was because the soil was bad and there were frequent droughts and tornadoes. Only grass could grow here. That's why they are called plains. There was lots of metal though. When the barbed wire was invented fences made out of this wire were very cheap. Also anyone trying to climb over these would be injured.
