Špilberk Castle~totally worthy to be visited

I think that this quote is the best advice someone could give. “This world is but a canvas to our imagination.”~Henry David Thoreau. So, go ahead, imagine. Embrace your creativity and dare to do everything that you want. That’s what I did, and it went well. I was to Brno before Covid struck, but let me tell you it is a place that it is worth your time. Especially, the Špilberk Castle. As you might know, Czech Republic is known for their castles. This one was the place I loved the most about Brno. It is on a hill and was established in the 13th century by Přemysl Otakar II to protect both the Czech lands and the town of Brno. The castle walls offer an amazing view of Brno. The castle is a cultural center and houses Muzeum města Brna (the Brno City Museum). The castle’s large interior courtyard holds a fifteen-bell carillon, a lookout in the corner tower, and the Baroque Holy Trinity chapel.

But like anything in this world, this castle has shadows. In 18th century, it was transformed into a jail for serious criminals and soon also for political prisoners. Špilberk was known as the harshest jail in Europe. Its famous prisoners included Italian Carbonari, notably poet Silvio Pellico, and Václav Babinský, the famous Czech bandit.

So, be brave, sip from the cup of life and visit this castle, because otherwise you will miss out on their vaulted passages, which are rich with romantic as well as terrifying legends.

The Reduta Theatre is a theatre in Brno which began its life in Renaissance times as the Taverna Theatre. The theatre held in 1767 a performance by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and his sister, being a cultural centre in Western Europe. The building, which was first mentioned in 1608, is the oldest theatre building in Central Europe. The theatre was rebuilt after extensive fires in 1785 and 1786, maintaining the history the building held. Since 2010, the theatre is a part of the National Theatre in Brno. It is a great place to witness how centuries of culture and social development shaped the building which we see today, representing the cultural value of the city in the Czech Republic.

Gherca Darius

For the people who love history, is the best, for the ones that love a nice view, it holds the most wonderful one gathering all the city and is also great for music fans.

Dating from the 13th century, Špilberk Castle (hrad Špilberk) was built on a commanding hill by Czech King Pøemysl Otakar II and has served many roles over the years, including those of royal castle, fortress, and prison. Today, the castle is home to the Brno City Museum, established in 1904 and home to many excellent permanent (and frequent temporary) exhibitions. Moreover, it is one of the most important cultural centers in the city.

What makes is special and likeable are the

permanent exhibits that focus on the architectural history of the castle and its role as a prison, as well as the history of Brno. In addition, concerts, theatrical performances – including a popular Shakespearian festival – and other cultural events are held in the castle's courtyard throughout the summer, and visitors are also encouraged to climb the lookout tower for its fine views over the old city.

Špilberk’s importance and role changed fundamentally over the course of the centuries.

The Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul is a national cultural monument, located in the heart of the city Brno on the Petrov hill. It is also one of the tallest buildings in Brno, displaying impressive 84-metre-high towers. The interior of the chapel is built mostly in Baroque style, and the towers were constructed to the Gothic Revival designs of the architect August Kirstein around 1905.

Another interesting thing about the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul is the historical importance of it. The chapel's bells always ring noon at 11 A.M., a tradition that dates back centuries. This is because in 1645, according to the legend, when the Swedes were invading the city, they had promised that if they do not manage to seize it by noon, they would retreat. Some citizens decided to try and fool the them by ringing the bells one hour early and it worked, and so the tradition was born.

Nenciu Alexandra

Highlights include its exquisite Baroque interior, as well as the 84-meter-tall twin towers that were added at the start of the 20th century (the main part of the building dates from the mid-1700s).

If possible, try to time your visit to coincide with the ringing of the midday bells, which in fact sound at 11am (legend has it the early peel successfully tricked attacking Swedes into ending their siege). Another highlight is a chance to see the remnants of the original city walls buried underneath the cathedral, as well as its interesting old crypt.

The Liberty/Freedom Square, located in Brno's historical center and first mentioned in the 13th century, is an amazing place to visit. Just by walking around the square, you can see the impressive buildings which combined make the square a place where the old and modern styles intertwine. A few examples of buildings are the House of the Lords of Lipá (built in the Renaissance period), the Klein Palace (with its beautiful cast-iron windows), the House of Four Giants (built in 1902) and the Omega Palace (with its glass facade that changes colors at night). There are a few sculptures to admire like the giant black granite astronomical clock and the Plague Column which was built in 1689 to remember the plague outbreaks in Brno. The square has another extraordinary feature and that is the fact that numerous events, music festivals and even small concerts take place there every season or month so as a tourist you have many chances to see one. More than that, there are several restaurants, coffee shops and stores you can check out.

Mihon Corina

If you need somewhere to get away from all the hustle and bustle of the city, Špilberk Park is your perfect destination.
Established in 1861 upon the initiative of Mayor dʼElvert, the park has a total area of around 17 hectares, so you will have enough space to stretch your muscles and enjoy a beautiful walk in nature.
While visiting Špilberk Park you can also see the remarkable sculpture of local poet Jan Skácel by artist Jiří Sobotka. You can, symbolically, see the Old Brno neighbourhood through his eyes and imagine how was like living in Brno during the times when he was alive. The sculpture represents, metaphorically, a time bubble that takes us back into the 19th century.
A walk in a park is a great way of coping with the stress of everyday life. Špilberk Park has a viewpoint which is perfect for enjoying a marvellous time, admiring the landscape of the whole town.

I am a lover of gothic architecture so of course my favourite place is the cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul!
It's a really beautiful building that is definetly worth visiting and it reminds me of so many other cathedrals that I have visited and loved all over Europe.

Its history is quite fascinating: it dates back to the 11th and 12th centuries, when a Romanesque chapel was built on the top of a hill. At the end of the 12th century, a small church with an apse and a crypt was built there, and in the 13th century it was expanded into a Romanesque basilica, the remains of which were discovered during an archaeological study of the cathedral at the end of the 20th century; the site is now open to the public. The church was then rebuilt in the early Gothic style and made a provost church and a collegiate chapter. The artist behind the 18th-century Baroque interior was architect Mořic Grimm. The current main altar was created at the end of the 19th century. The ‘Kapistránka’ pulpit located on the left side of the hall is a remarkable piece of art; it is named after the Franciscan friar St John of Capistrano, who preached in Brno in the second half of 1451. The bells on the cathedral towers ring at 11 am instead of at noon in remembrance of a legendary trick that Jean-Louis Raduit de Souches played on the Swedish army as it lay siege to Brno. As the story goes, Swedish general Torstenson claimed he would abandon the siege if his army failed to conquer the city before the bells started to ring at noon. For this reason, de Souches decided to have the bells ring one hour earlier.

A place full of stories and art and a must when visiting Brno!

Maria Georgescu

Villa Tugendhat is considered a masterpiece, designed by the German architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Built between the years 1928-1930 in Brno, in today's Czech Republic, for Fritz Tugendhat and his wife Greta, the villa soon became an icon of modern architecture.

It is a paradigmatic example of functionalism. Mies used the revolutionary iron framework which enabled him to dispense with supporting walls and arrange the interior in order to achieve a feeling of space and light. He also designed all furniture (two types of armchair designed for the building, the Tugendhat chair and the Brno chair, are still in production). There were no paintings or decorative items in the villa but the interior was by no means austere due to the use of naturally patterned materials such as the captivating onyx wall and rare tropical woods. The onyx wall is partially translucent and changes appearance when the evening sun is low. The architect also managed to make the magificient view from the villa an integral part of the interior.

The cost of building the villa was very high due to the unusual construction method, the luxurious materials, very modern technology of heating, ventilation, etc. It is also quite large for a family house, a fact which may escape casual visitors since the elegant simplicity of the rooms used by the family is compensated by a very large space occupied by various utility rooms.

Fritz and Greta Tugendhat, who were Jewish, left Czechoslovakia with their children in 1938, shortly before the country was dismembered following the Munich Agreement. They never returned. The house was used for various practical purposes for several decades after World War II and in 1992 the political leaders of Czechoslovakia met there to sign the document that formally divided the country into the present separate states of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Since 1994 the villa has been open to the public as a museum administered by the city of Brno.

Busoiu Matei

When visiting the beautiful city of Brno, you definitely shouldn’t miss out on Špilberk Castle. It really has something for everyone: a great view of the town, lots of history and a medieval charm, that is typical for the castles that Czech Republic is so famous for. The Špilberk Castle has a history of over seven centuries, dating from mid-13th century and due to its location, architecture and cultural importance it is a a staple tourist attraction, being rated in the top most beautiful castles in the world. Through the years, the tumultuous history of this place has inspired very strong emotions among the citizens of Brno, as its domination over the skyline of the city made it a symbol of protection and safety, but later on it has also served as a remarkably harsh prison during the Austrian Empire rule, making the fortress also a symbol of hostility and fear in a very interesting manner. The Špilberk Fortress made its way into literature as well, as the prison is often mentioned in a famous novel by Stendhal, “The Charterhouse of Parma”. Another thing the castle has to offer is the Brno City Museum, where tourists can observe exhibitions about the local history and culture, which is a must in a country that is so rich in traditions and cultural heritage. And if all of this history still doesn’t seem to make this castle worth a shot, then the amazing panoramic view of Brno that can be enjoyed up from the hill will for sure do it.

Miruna Ungureanu
