Specifically, in this poem, she writes a contradictory statement of how success is longed for by people who don't succeed often. Additionally, she writes about a soldier who had died, yet his army had won. In return, the soldier had died which is contradictory in how even though he had died, it meant success. In the poem, Dickinson states, "So clear, of Victory / As he, defeated - dying -," (Lines 8-9). These two ideas of victory and dying play a role in building a motif around the poem such as, "What is truly success," and "How do we define success?" Emily Dickinson uses words and phrases such as "sorest," "defeated," "dying," and "not one of all," to reveal this tone to readers. In the second and last stanza, the poet talks about a war that was one by one of the sides, but a soldier on the winning side died anyway. This makes the reader question if the situation really is success or just sorrow. This poem is ironic, as you would expect everyone to celebrate since the war is won.
