I thought the idea about doing point values for questions was genius. There's no point in having kids complete an entire worksheet of tons of problems. Kids love choices so let them choose! It's a win-win for all.

What's the best way to handle classes that have students that are truly all over the board in math? The 2nd grade class I shadowed had kids that were still struggling with basic addition, up to kids that we ready to conquer multiplication.

1. Focus on what teachers can control that would have greatest effect on student's achievement - Hattie's "Barometer of Influence"

2. The point system of problems that students can choose to practice their math skills.

3. Instead of drilling students with more work of the same types of problems, focus on having students practice on what they understand from what they learned, so they can make the connections on applying to other areas.

I liked the color coding level of understanding.
I like that it is not necessary to give extra work to see the understanding that the students have.
And I like that we can show videos or something creative as a hook.

1. Is it ok if my math lesson is in two separate time blocks during the day? We have our math lesson in the morning and then an independent math later in the day.

2. If I wanted to give our students a DOK level 3 question, do I give that to all students or just the ones I know can complete it.

I really liked the Exploding Dots video and how it was able to get kids to understand math, even though they weren't in the classroom.

I appreciate the note that the Conclusion part of the lesson should also include how the main idea of the lesson will be used in the future.

I like that the reflection part of lesson planning includes the plan's impact on learning and its impact on teaching.

You mentioned last class not to teach beyond our grade's standards (when we are a teacher). If you do have a student that is very advanced, would we still always be able to differentiate within our standards to meet their needs?

My mentor teacher mentioned having been trained Singapore Math (a long time ago), and that she frequently refers back to the skills she learned from the program. Could you discuss that program and if you do or don't recommend its practices?

Standard: This is the math standard the students were working on last week. I will need to determine where they will be at in the next couple weeks.
