The praying mantis is a carnivorous hunter. They are most famous for their sexual cannibalism. The female will often devour the head of the smaller male during or after copulation. It’s not certain why this happens – perhaps the extra protein helps her conceive. The female lays hundreds of eggs and the newly hatched nymphs look like miniature versions of their parents. Sometimes the nymphs feast on each other, as well.They have angular heads in the shape of a triangle with prominent eyes and their front legs are bent in the distinctive “prayer pose” from which their name derives
