Under religious influence, Xiuquan believed in reforming China into a "Heavenly Kingdom of Great Peace", the Taiping. The war lasted for 14 years until the government crushed the rebellion with help from generals and high-ranking leaders aiding them.

The French took land near the colony of Indochina. And others took land elsewhere. This means that the Europeans now have territory underneath their influence.
