Comment: Quick check assessments is definitely an effective way to identify where the students are in terms of their learning development. It is definitely an excellent point that students' thinking improves when they get more familiar with the criteria especially if the teacher has gone over it with them for months.

Helping children set and record individualized goals: COMMENT
I learned that it is important for children to know the expectation like we discussed in class but using their language neat, colorful. They get the opportunity to make inclusive decisions that are listened to by the teacher. With that information, the teacher allows the criteria to be personal so that it is something the children can relate to because it was their ideas. It allows them to set the self goals as well when the rubric becomes person because they realize what "I Can do" I also agree that when criteria is in place that the praise for doing critical thinking should be more in depth. Rather than saying good job, good word choice, we as teachers should ask questions. We should give more in depth feedback as in, why was it a good job, what makes you think that this is good for this rubric.

Comment: Collecting data over time may be time consuming but shows children growth over time. Example given with words recognized quickly and accurately. This shows children week one they got this percentage, but over the next weeks it grows. Using the quick check to predict how well they did during this assessment.

The students showed that they recognized improvement by the amount of work they accomplished and the number of questions answered correctly. By using Quick Checks, students become more aware of expectations and how to successfully complete an assignment. The quality is more difficult to evaluate but the judgments improved over time as the students became familiar with the criteria and what was expected of them.

Allowing students time in class to practice revising their work in class can not only help them improve, but encourages them to help others. This is one way that teachers can help reference student work and suggest proper grouping for the students. Children's feedback is also an important factor and helps teacher plan for improvement.

I predict that these second graders were able to better their academic performance by using this self-assessment quick check tool throughout the school year. I believe this because if teachers are able to learn about student needs by analyzing assessments then students would be able to use assessments as well to support their personal needs. When students have this understanding, they are able to recognize what they can do themselves to support their academic performance.

The article talked about the effect of students scoring their own assessments and them wanting to improve their reading skills both at school and at home

Comment: By working with the students on things that are expected of them, it helped the students then dive deeper into the topics. Such as when the article talked about how student behavior was introduced to the rubric, students began to think about their personal behavior and broke it into subcategories that set their personal goals as well as the class goals. From this the children were motivated to keep their tally of their behavior throughout the week to meet the goal and their own personal goal.

4: When using the quick check frame, students are able to see WHY teachers make recommendations for goals. (common language for making plans together) For example, if a student consistently marks a 2 for reading level, but a 4 for word recognition, the student can understand why the teacher would recommend more challenging books (push out of comfort zone to meet goals)

It provides the families with information needed to learn that their child is learning and their teachers are teaching. On the other hand, students who are struggling; the collaboration amongst the teacher/families allow them to create goals for the students to meet.

These quick checks can be super benifitial! I really like the idea of students having the opportunity to self assess. What’s really cool is that after a while they will have internalized these quick checks. Quick checks will strengthen their metacognition skills and result in quality work they will be proud of.

Alexandria King
Section 2
After reading section 2 of the article “Purposeful Teaching Behaviors” I would like to make a comment on two of the four purposeful teaching behaviors that complement and extend the effectivness of the childrens quick checks that were mentioned in the article. In my opinion keeping a record over time of the students self assessments is an awesome idea because it allows the students and parents to see if their child is progressing or if they still need support in certain areas. Lastly, I agree with helping the children celebrate their progress and achievment because it will motivate the students to continuously self assess themselves truthfully and work hard to plan different self goals along with the teachers goals in order for them to continue to grow, learn and progress with their areas of need and support in every content area.
