Bucky's Nightmares

In episode one, Bucky frequently has nightmares about his time as the winter soldier, which leaves him with PTSD. In this specific nightmare, Bucky is seen completing a Hydra assassination attempt and he kills an innocent bystander, who we then find out is a man named RJ, the son of Bucky's former neighbor. He then wakes up and we see him at his therapy appointment next.

In episode one, Bucky is sitting in therapy and lies to his therapist about his nightmares even though she can tell he is lying. He also lies about the rules he should be using to make amends. (Therapy is a part of his parole, he didn’t just choose to go.)

Sam Gives Bucky Advice

In episode 5, we see Bucky and Sam practicing with the shield and Sam gives Bucky valuable advice.

- “You got to stop looking towards other people to tell you who you are.”

- “No, you weren’t amending you were avenging.”

Ayo Heals Bucky

In episode 4, there's a flashback to 6 years ago when Bucky was in Wakanda, and we see him sitting around a campfire with Ayo beside him. Here, she promises Bucky she won't let him hurt anyone and speaks the codewords Zemo used previously in Captain America Civil War. As she recites them, Bucky has flashbacks of the people he had killed and hurt as the winter soldier, causing him to begin crying from the weight of these emotions and memories. After finishing, Ayo tells Bucky that he is free, and Bucky is able to recognize that he’s ok and he can begin to make amends.

Bucky Works Towards Making Amends

At the end of episode 6, Bucky is seen making amends the right way. He goes to Yori's home and admits that he was the one who killed his son RJ when on a mission for Hydra. Yori is left heartbroken at the fact, but to Bucky, the weight is lifted from letting the truth go. We then see that he left his book in the therapist's office with all the names crossed off, freeing him from his past.

It helps set the narrative that seeking help isn’t a sign of weakness or an alien idea but a great step toward redemption and self-improvement.
