This is likely due to the fact that the Dutch had treated Indonesia very harshly during the time it was a colony and had continued to treat Indonesia cruelly, including the two Police Actions, the second one which was met with international condemnation, forcing the Dutch to acknowledge Indonesia as independent. Meanwhile in Malaya, most armed conflicts during the decolonisation was for the intention of removing the communist forces in Malaya.

As such the US was keen on having Indonesia as an independent state to aid them in being against the Communist Bloc. But in Vietnam, after the Japanese were kicked out, they intend to set up a Communist regime, to which the US was not happy. As such they interfere heavily, fearing the Domino effects, causing Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Thailand would fall to communism and build a strong Southest Asian Communist Bloc. This cause a civil war to broke out in Vietnam with the US interfering militarily, delaying independence in Vietnam.

They required Malaya to be multiracial to assure the British and this was quickly achieved.

Malaya was relatively untouched by conflict compared to Indonesia, the US entrusted Malaya to the British, unlike Indonesia, which was controlled by the Dutch. The US didn’t approve of the Dutch oppressing Indonesia and rather preferred the Dutch to focus on recovery in Europe after World War 2. Furthermore, due to rash decisions by the Dutch such as the Second Police Action, the Dutch lost international favourability and the US ultimately decided to side with the anti-communist indonesia against their fight for independence against the Dutch. This led to an early victory and earlier décolonisation. On the other hand, the international community didn’t have any problems with the British and their occupation of Malaya, including the US, which was convinced there was no immediate communist threat in Malaya. However the British wanted to trample any remaining communist forces before acknowledging Malaya’s independence, that décolonisation took longer.

In Indonesia, straight after the war, Sukarno declared the independent Republic of Indonesia. He had quite a few supporters due to the strong nationalistic ideals of many Indonesians, partially due to the harsh treatment of the Dutch in the colonial years before the war. The Dutch naturally did not want to let go of Indonesia, and so the Dutch forces clashed with the Indonesian ones. The Dutch were forced to sign a treaty recognising the independant republic of Indonesia, however, the Dutch were still reluctant to let go. They launched a few police actions to try to undermine the Indonesians, but this was met with a lot of resistance from America. This was due to the Indonesian government being very anti-communist, leading them to even put down the communists in Indonesia by themselves without the Dutch. And so the Dutch had to withdraw from Indonesia, leading to a quick decolonisation. The British in Malaya, however, had to stay in Malaya after the war to deal with the problem of communism, which took a while to deal with. Sir Gerald Templar won the hearts of the Malays, and this allowed the communist influence in Malaya to be undermined, and this led to communism no longer being a threat. However, this also took a while, as the British could not put down the insurgency immediately as most of the communists were supported by Chinese.

The actions by the Dutch also drew international condemnation due to their cruelty, especially since the US did not support colonization after the war during this period, when they were generally friendlier with the USSR.

In Vietnam, initially the US left the French to deal with Vietnam, as the US wanted the French to focus on economic recovery.
