It seems logical that Willy had been drinking, so I would have made the scene take place at around midnight, and with multiple bottles of alcohol open. When Biff walks in, I think he would have started sobbing right away, because he failed to graduate and feels as though he has disappointed his father. I also think that Willy would have chosen to be a slightly better dad, and rather than yell at Biff, try to calm him down.
