As we read chapter 18 we begin to see Ratliff's views on this subject. Ratliff believes that on occasion music can be somewhat repetitive, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. All music is different, and music has the opportunity to be non-linear and to be completely innovative or different. As we continue in the chapter, Ratliff describes how some songs have unexpected pitch changes or have complete changes in tone. In my opinion i would say linking is the lack of regularity so I do agree with Ratliff on this concept and its relevance, music should be able to change and in a way be unexpected/surprising. One of Ratliff's examples is Gabriel Faure's Piano Quintets. My example is "Song X" by Pat Methany & Ornette Coleman I chose this song because the pitch and tone change throughout the entire song.
