Harry's team has arrived. They prepare and send in an automatic robot called Spider Legs. The robot is sent into the crater of the volcano. This seems plausible. Unfortunately, the machine breaks down. One of Harry's coworkers, Terry , has to go down and retrieve it. A seismic quake erupts, and they narrowly avoid getting crushed. Harry's boss, Paul, refuses to admit that an eruption is coming. He says they need more proof. Harry's team decides to leave. The equipment is set up so they can continue to monitor from their headquarters. Paul could be correct, since in a danger zone like a volcano, seismic activity happens due to instability beneath the earth. So far, for a week nothing has happened, which could be a sign that Harry could be wrong. Harry notices that water is being contaminated by sulphur dioxide . This is scientifically accurate, since the sulphur is coming from the same instability. A sulphur cloud comes out before an eruption. This is accurate. Harry tells Paul what is happening. Paul accepts the truth of what is coming. Rachel and Harry prepare to leave town. A meeting is going on. Investors withdraw interest in the town. There is a massive seismic quake and the beginning of the eruption. Rachel's kids leave the house to try to rescue Ruth. Lava engulfs the house. The eruption has not even started yet. Harry and Rachel are chasing Rachel's kids. There are lava "bombs" & ash falling. They reach Ruth and the kids. The evacuation is completed, and they can't wait for Harry. The group escapes on water, in a boat. The water has turned acidic- This is accurate. Sulphur salts in the ash from the volcano. Fish are also dying. This is accurate, since fish can't survive in acidic water. Ruth dies. Flooding is caused by the instability. Paul dies as the bridge gives way. A pyroclastic cloud destroys the town. The group gets trapped in a coal mine. Harry sets off a beacon.
There were many accurate scientific points in the movie. For example, when there is magma flowing through the ground it can result in seismic tremors. The increased carbon dioxide is accurate. Magma contains carbon dioxide, which is released into the air when the magma comes up. That is why some animals are dying. The idea of the lake becoming acidic is scientific. Sulphur Dioxide is released into the atmosphere when the volcano is erupting. When it mixes with water it makes it very acidic.
The non-scientific point was that the main characters are driving a car through the lava and all. The car did not catch on fire. I would expect that to happen.
