In school we look around our local area for signs of the seasons changing. Many notable scientists, including David Attenborough and Charles Darwin, said walks like this first got them interested in science and they have gone on to have successful careers.

Investigate patterns

Year 3 investigated whether people with longer legs could jump further than those with shorter legs. The children discovered that technique is most important.

Rocks and Soils

Year 3 created different types of rocks (sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic) but made of chocolate.

The children made sedimentary rocks by grating layers of chocolate and pressing them together to form one solid, layered rock. They then made igneous rocks by heating their rocks in the ‘magma flow’ (hot water) and watching it cool down. We finally made metamorphic rock by applying heat and pressure.

Year 3 used their knowledge or sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks to classify them in a range of different ways.

We looked at the different properties of rocks. The children tested their density and permeability.

Fossils

We looked at how fossils are formed before making our very own cast fossil.

Year 3 looked at how water transports through a plant. We discussed the functions of a plant and xylem before conducting our own experiment. The children made a prediction as to what would happen if they added food colouring to water. They then observed over time for the results.

Year 3 looked at the job of a structural engineer and linked it with their geography topic. They went on to design a structure to withstand an earthquake. They looked at what went well and how they could improve the design.

Class trip to RHS Bridgewater

Year 3 visited RHS Bridgwater to explore plants. We looked at photosynthesis, germination and even had a go at demonstrating seed dispersal.
