Due to the text and vocabulary being complex, I would read this book as an interactive read aloud. I would read this book more than once. First, just focusing on the vocabulary and even providing a fun creative writing assignment afterwards. Such as, drawing their own invention and then writing about it. The next day, we would dive deeper into the book to determine what the meaning and moral of the story is.

I would do the first read as an interactive read aloud. Since this book is complex, thoroughly covering the vocabulary and certain pages of the book is vital for understanding the text and meaning of the book. For example, the book features a food web. Discussing the food web, how it works, and and why we have food webs is important, especially if this is the first time they have witnessed a food web. This book would work beautifully with a writing assignment where they discuss cause and effect. Ensuring that they go back into the text to support their answers.

I would do this book as an interactive read aloud. Carefully ensuring that my students understand the vocabulary words. After the reading, I would provide them with a writing assignment where they will write if they think the shoes are a want or a need and why they think that. This book can and should be read more than once. More activities can be done alongside with this book. Such as, providing students a way to "earn money" and allowing them to have free range to "buy" something from the classroom store. Then, have them write down if what they bought was a want or a need and why they chose that.

This book would be best used only as an interactive read aloud due to its complexity. Due to the challenging vocabulary, I would first want to create an anchor chart with the students so they can best understand the words to help them fully understand the entire text. These vocabulary words would work well with body movements to help them understand these words. Also, providing pictures with the words. A good writing assignment for this book would be to draw and label the Earth rotating around the sun.

I would use this book as an interactive read aloud. Since there are many metaphors in this story, it would be good for us to create a chart where we would write down the metaphors we hear and the similes we hear. To get children's creativity working, allowing them to draw a piece that they would put on their own quilt and then creating their own metaphor to explain what their quilt makes them think of would not only be fun, but also would help them develop knowledge on how to write their own metaphor. I also think it would be cute to take their quilt pictures and glue it all together to make a huge classroom quilt to hang up on the wall in the class.

I would use this book as an independent read. While the text does have some complex words, it is still an easy read with simple words. Once the vocabulary is explained, the students are able to read this book independently. After reading independently, I would have them sit with a partner and do coral reading together. Or, let them do peanut butter and jelly partners. I would have the students draw a bee and write down 3 facts they learned from the book. I would give them sentence starter such as "One fact I learned was", "The second fact I learned was", and "The third thing I learned was".

I would use this book as an interactive read aloud first and then use it as a shared read. I would create an anchor chart before the interactive read so when they do their shared read, they are able to have a chart to refer back to when they stumble upon one of those tricky vocabulary words. I would then have them do a writing activity where they will retell the story of swimmy. Ensuring they go back into the text and use text evidence to write down all their details.

I would first read this as an interactive read aloud. Some questions I would ask throughout the book would pertain to how Arfy (the god) feels. At the beginning, he is happy and excited to find a home. Towards the middle he starts to feel defeated, and at the end, he feels hopeless. However, at the end, when he finds his new owner, he is ecstatic! I would get them familiar with the layout of the book and get them familiar with how letters are written. I would then allow them to partner up and read the book together. Eventually, once they are comfortable with the layout, I would want them to read the book independently. This book would set up a great writing activity! I would love to write a letter together as a class to model how to write a letter and we would write a letter to the animal shelter. I would then send them back to their desks to write their own letter!

I would use this book as a shared read. I would coral read with my students. Since this book is only slightly complex, I would do a shared read first and then send them on their own to read it independently. This book would work perfectly with many different activities! I would want to create a KWL chart before reading because they should have some knowledge about butterflies and will be gaining more during this story. A KWL chart would help with the activity I would do as well so they can refer back to the chart as they are working. One activity that I would want to see my students achieve is drawing a timeline of a butterflies life cycle and labeling each part.

I would use this book as an interactive read aloud. This book would be a good book for students to use background knowledge. Possibly they recycle at home! If not, it does say in the beginning of the book that the characters did not always recycle, they used to throw everything away! So they are familiar with trash cans! This book would provide a good activity for the students. They can sort/match items to recycle or trash. They could also draw a picture of an item they would recycle and write what it is and why they would recycle it. This can also set up a year long activity! If this book is read at the beginning of the year, I could bring in a recycling bin into the classroom and we can learn to recycle all year long together!
