1789- Storming of Bastille

Occurred in Paris, France on July 14 of the year 1789. A revolution in which insurgents attempted to storm and seize control of the medieval armory, fortress, and political prison which was known as the Bastille. 250 barrels of gunpowder were seized and freeing its prisoners.

1791-Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen

August 20 and August 26, 1789, by France's National Assembly, served as the preamble to the Constitution of 1791. The main point of it was that all people should have natural rights, such as man should be born free and remain free with equal rights.

1792-The National Convention is established

Political parties partake in national conventions to choose presidential and vice presidential nominees. State representatives from the primaries and caucuses selected to represent the people decide their favorite candidates and the final nominee from each party is announced by the end of the conventions. In April 1793, the Convention created the Committee of Public Safety.

1792-The Republic of France is Declared

On September 22nd, 1792, the National Convention became the new government of France and the next day it abolished the monarchy and declared a republic. The Insurrection of August 10, 1792, led to the creation of the National Convenion which was chosen by universal male suffrage and charged with a new writing constitution.

1793- The Constitution was Suspended

In October of the year 1793, this rule that guaranteed all Frenchmen equality, liberty, security, and property was suspended as the war occurred. The Convention suspended constitutional rule in favor of revolutionary government until the peace.

1791- The French Constitution of 1791 is accepted

The first written constitution that was established in France which created a new structure for the Government of France. It specifically limited the power of the French monarchy, delegated legislative powers to an elected National Assembly, and created an elected judiciary. Only some members of the Third Estate, who were wealthy gained from this Constitution, as members from the first and second estates were dissatisfied as their privileges were erased and they had to pay taxes.

1793-1794 The Reign of Terror

This was a violent period from the French Revolution in which the radicals that were led by Maximilien Robespierre were running for government. During this period thousands of people were arrested and soon after killed due to being suspected of showing treason to the Revolution.

1795- The Directory Takes Power

Directory takes charge after the Reign of Terror. Between the 12-21 October 1795, elections for the new Councils decreed by the new Constitution took place. For the most part, moderate Republicans were elected to the new legislature.

1796/1797- First Italian Campaign

On April 2, 1796, Bonaparte led his army into Italy and was poorly outnumbered. His 38000 French soldiers were faced by 38000 Austrians as well as 25000 Piémontaise which were Austrian allies. Bonaparte's plan was to isolate the Austrians from the Piémontaise and take them down separately.

1798- The Quiet Period

At this time everything was quiet in terms of the French Revolutionary Wars. The major continental powers in the first coalition had come to peace with France. France was left dominant in Europe with only one small naval war with Great Britain to worry about.

1799- End of the French Revolution
