I believe that tourist is needed on this earth but to much of it in one place is bad for not only people but the environment. Some places like Bermuda strongly benefit off the level of tourist and that's how that country makes its money. I think that there are a few ways we can fix this problem. Firstly, if the world's leaders come together to form a reasonably rule that will help contain overtourism. For example, popular destinations can have a limit of how much tourist are allowed during one time. Secondly, each popular destination can have locals only areas so no tourists can rome in that area.I feel like there are many ways that we can work around this so that both locals and tourist are happy.

Since 2017, the mass amount of tourism is crowding the streets and the resident's homes. "This is your holiday, but this is my home." Additionally, an older, local women in South Africa was scrutinized for wanting to make her home into a restaurant. Due to over-tourism, residents of Venice and Barcelona are leaving. The paradise islands, the real name of the place being Gili Trawangan, look more like a wasteland than paradise. There weren't many people coming, but there are now a couple thousand people each day! The amount of tourism is getting out of hand and people don't know who to turn to/who's running it. Some locals are feeling like they should be the priority instead of tourists. I think that tourists shouldn't be above locals, but you still should be hospitable to the tourists. - Julia

I think tourism is very important because many countries could not function as well for example Bermuda who largely relies on tourism. Although so many countries do rely on tourism it has a negative affect on the civilians who can not live like they used to because their culture is disrupted by the mass amounts of tourists. Tourists could also be very loud if they are young people who just finished school so they go out get very intoxicated and are loud when people are trying to sleep. In places like Venice people were also saying that locals are leaving because for examples the canals are packed with tourist boats and the are the main way of transport for Venice. Tourism overall I think is a good thing because the economy stays strong and if the economy would not be strong then the city or island would collapse and live would become worse.

Oliver Baron- I think that overtourism is very bad for the authenticity of the cities that are being affected because the culture is going away. For example, the food markets in barcelona aren't selling their original food anymore because all the tourists are overrunning the markets and taking pictures and aren't interested in the food. This forces the owners of the stalls to start selling things like fruit juice to actually appeal to the tourists, therefore killing off all of the old food culture.

Tourism is a very popular business that brings in a lot of money but with the sheer amount of people on the tiny islands and cities that are just visiting makes it so that there is not enough space for the people that are just living there o live comfortably. This is bad for the community but good for the government because the government is getting more money than ever before but in turn the community is being pushed into poverty and cant have a peaceful life because of all the people visiting. this is where the government, the community, and the tourism management people should come together and find an equilibrium of where the government still makes money, the community can live how they want and the tourist can have fun without hurting the community. -Nathan Roberts

I think that in ways tourism can be a really good and useful thing to countries economy like bermuda but in other ways it can be very bad. Tourism can have a negative effect on locals because I remember hearing in the documentary someone said 'This is your holiday, but this is my home.' In places where over tourism is happening it can lead people to not having a home because of things like airbnb where they use the homes to rent to tourists instead of locals. Since there is a lot of people that means that there will be a lot of trash and that is terrible for places because it could lead to that being destroyed or overwhelmed with trash. - Eddy

Angelina- In my opinion, this issue is something that is not easily contained. This is because for someone to say, we're limiting tourism, cannot have an impact on what people do. It has to be a societal or communal change in perspective and certain tactics such as advertisement and costs. For places like Barcelona and Venice, the whole atmosphere is being focused on tourism to the point where a daily activity can be formed into a sort of tourism such as the markets in Barcelona. This will drive people out of the country and diminish the culture of said places. The culture of Venice and Barcelona comes from its people and if there are none left, the tourists will be visiting just any other place, rather than a community full of life and culture.

Locals are being driven out of their home country. Places are being changed and fitted for tourists. Tourism explosion is what has people worried. Countries need to set limits. Too much travel writers sending false info. Countries are becoming places that they are not. I feel that Bermuda seems to be doing a good job of managing tourism, but I think that it is going to be hard to stop overtourism in places all over the world. In Venice butcher and bakers are being driven out by hotel and souvenir shops and it is not fair that all this history all over the world will be forgotten.

In Venice the rivers that separate the city or for gondolas, in the documentary there were tourists in kayaks going through the rivers. One person said that ' this is your holiday, but this is my home' and that is very true people are invading the locals space. The paradise island looked like an actual paradise but when tourists went there it became a trash pit.

Tourism is a very controversial subject. On one hand, places like Bermuda can barely survive without it. Tourism is the main source of income for lots of Bermudas residents. However, places like Thailand are being crushed by the sheer number of people visiting. A solution to a problem like this is difficult to find; there is no right move. People in Venice and Barcelona, people whose families have lived there for generations, are having to move as their homes become overcrowded. There are no longer enough homes to support all of Venice's original residents as many flats the would house them are being turned into bed and breakfasts. On the other side of the spectrum, COVID 19 will have greatly affected the world and when it's over, tourism will be affected too. Not as many people will feel like or be able to go on a holiday. This will majorly influence Bermuda's economy for the worse; lots of people will lose a major source of their income. -Amelie

This is product of overtourism. The country has lost its amazing qualities it was previously known for, which is what overtourism does. It also served a problem in venice where many shops started to cater towards tourists and many of previous availabilities are now gone. As well as people being pushed out of their houses by a rise of apartment and house rentals too. Over tourism is bad and can be detrimental to a countries economy.

Simply put, tourism makes a lot of money. In so many people's eyes, like so many other things, money comes first over people, the environment and the nature. Tourism is something that has great short term positives, but long term, the negatives outweigh the positives. It is something that can be controlled by the governments and local businesses if they choose the money isn't worth it. Limits can be put on the amounts of tourists, but in the end, tourists are just people and so many of them will understand if they are thoroughly told about what they are doing to these places. Also, if these countries try and improve tourism in other cities, the tourists will spread out. - Oliver D

A lack of long term housing for locals causes them to move away from their homes. As more locals leave the character and authenticity of the place leaves as well. I feel like it's ok for people to want to travel around but definitely not when the tourists end up disrespecting locals because it is not their land and they leave trash in a lot of places and then just leave because they might think that it is not their problem. The part in the documentary where multiple people were in the canal were trying to get past each other was a good example of how crowded places could get. -Charlotte

I think tourism is needed to help people get away from all the stress of their job and to relax, but also tourism can be dangerous to the environment because people are destroying many animal habitats when they create theme parks and other attractions. Some places do benefit from tourism by making money off of tourism such as Bermuda but it can be very bad sometimes if there is overtourism. But I think that if all leaders can come together they can achieve something like limiting the number of tourists or houses being rented. There are other ways such as laws that they can also put in order and if you break them you will get fined. This will still make tourists happy because they can still go on vacations.-Cole Steinhoff

One of the saddest things about over tourism is that so many people don't know about it. The scary thing is in a heart beat this could happen to bermuda. It is less likely to happen in bermuda because flights in and out of bermuda are very expensive, but with the new airport we could end up getting companies like easyjet and ryanair coming to bermuda with boat loads of people. companies like those two don't care about anything but the money.

I think that tourism in the state that it is in now is very bad for everyone, people take small unique places for granted and they rich people who own airlines and touring business only want to make money they don't care about anything else and that is probably why places like Venice and Barcelona are filled with tourists. Barcelona has authentic and unique food markets that are meant for locals to buy and sell food, but they are now turned into tourist attractions for pictures, they are filled with tourists taking pictures and not purchasing anything. This makes the sellers resort to non-original food and drinks to sell so they can make money. If more countries are affected by this we could see the world be a mess and everything would be a tourist attraction, but i doubt it would get to that stage. For things to change governments need to take actions and create rules and restrictions for tourists.

Tourism. Tourism will help a place to flourish, and then destroy all of it's local culture. Because of tourism places that were once special and beautiful are now part of the same old cliche. But at the same time it can allow people to experience these amazing places that they might not have known about. This comes with a price. Nowhere is safe from tourism, as the industry takes everything it can sell. You have beautiful places that were once so special to the people who live there, now a mob of people so thick you can barely move. you have residents being forced out of their homes because it becomes harder and harder to afford the rapidly increasing prices as the industry tries to pump out as much money of the people who visit there. But the worst of it all is cruise lines. When somebody comes on a cruise, they are not looking to spend money on local businesses, they only wish to see the most interesting things for a couple hours, and then they leave, a mass of waste in their wake. When a cruise comes to a place people aren't looking to eat at a restaurant- there's food on the ship! The only people who benefit are the souvenir shops, whom constantly replace every other local business. Because Tourism will squeeze out every last drop of authenticity from a place until all that's left are foreign food chains like starbucks, as well as countless souvenir shops and high prices. Nowhere is safe, as the industry will keep feeding. -Rory Lucas

I didn't realise how much tourism had taken over places such as Barcelona. The marketplace in Barcelona stopped selling essentials for locals and only sell things for tourists and some tourists only come for pictures of the markets and don't even buy anything. All they do is overcrowd the areas. Another problem is that there are more "homes" for tourists and less actual residents for the locals. -Tyler

This documentary has brought up a problem that I had not noticed. I rather thought that tourism was a good thing. It's a big industry that brings in lots of money to locals of a tourist destination as well as a way for people to see our very unique planet. This documentary has showed the exact opposite effects on local people and where they live. Overtourism causes the amount of money to survive in the tourist destination to go up making it harder to living spaces. These places are these peoples and lives that they're losing. You can live in many different places, but you only have one hometown. I feel that there should restrictions to the amount of tourists in top tourist destinations. -Will Errington

I always thought that all tourism was good. I never realized the drastic effects that tourism has on places like barcelona and venice. Places like barcelona and venice are experiencing overcrowding and pollution. Tropical islands that once had 40 people on it are now having 3000 visiting a day leaving the islands resources depleted and filled with trash. The locals in these places are being driven out because, once everyday tasks like going to the market have been turned into tourist attractions. The markets are flooded with tourists taking pictures rather than buying anything and the stands that were once filled with fresh food and resources for the locals are now just on trend items like fresh juice instead of food for making dinner or stocking the fridge. Soon all the places that people love to visit for the culture won't be popular anymore because all the locals will leave and take the culture with them.

There's no doubt that over tourism is a problem, but as the documentary said, tourism creates a ton of jobs for the travel industry, and the people who live in the tourism industry. The tourism industry is certainly causing many problems for the locals, but it also helping people experience enritching new cultures, and as I said, new jobs. Tourism should definitely be dialed down, and the impact on the locals should definitely be put into consideration. However, the tourism industry is in many ways a very good thing. Without the tourism industry, we would not be able to experience new cultures, foods, and languages that you can't experience with books and TV's. How would we be able to experience any sory of "otherness" in the world, if we can never leave our country. As one of the people who were being interviewed said: It's not about not going somewhere, its about how we go somewhere. However, if we don't control tourism, it will certainly destroy beautiful attractions, and other generations will never be able to experience the amazing cultures of other countries.
-Jamie

I did not realize that over tourism could could so much damage and basically ruin the place. All this time I thought tourism was good for economies because it makes the place more money and the reason I thought this was because one of Bermudas main sources of income for the island is tourism. And when people are away the don't think properly and they litter way more than when the were home because the don't think. So when so many visit a place in a year it can be very bad. Like it said in the documentary tourism makes a place loose its identity and authenticity because gift shops replace stuff like butcheries or bakeries.

When tourists all go to one place they will drive the locals out which actually hold their culture. Although tourism brings so much money, there does need to be a limit. But, watching this documentary, I was shocked to see the extent of over-tourism. The people who live in popular tourist destinations have a right to live how they want to live, and not be dictated by a blindfolded management/government. -Isobel Woods

I think That no one is trying to regulate tourism because in some places many people don't know how bad it actually is until they see it and when we are on vacations we are very selective about what we see. This also shows that we ourselves destroy the things that we want to see. Many beautiful landmarks of a place have been ruined by a constant stream of tourists. It also destroys the life of local people since it affects their home so much. If over-tourism like this continues like we will lose all the cool land marks and monuments. -Matthew H

I think that over tourism is something that a lot of people don't know about and that this topic gets overlooked as something that is over exaggerated. Also people tend to not care about a problem unless it directly effects them. I didn't know over tourism was a big deal and at first I didn't know why it would be a big issue considering it brings in money for the government and can be a big source for some country's economies. Some examples that I remember from over tourism being a bad thing was that small island that now has a lot of issues with 🤬 and is no longer a clean island. They now have trash everywhere and it is very untidy. I also think that the locals are very unhappy having all of these tourists in their space. It seems to be an invasion of their everyday life and the tourists are becoming very unwelcomed. -Ava

I think that, although tourism can be annoying to locals, if they live in a beautiful place, they can't expect to have it all to themselves, when others are stuck in dreary cities, etc. It's a bit selfish to want people to stay in their own perhaps miserable home, while you're at your home with beautiful weather and scenery. However, on the other hand, it CAN get out of hand if it severely disrupts the locals' lives, like if they're constantly being photographed. Also, many people's jobs relate to tourism, such as restaurants, guides, etc, so they might not be able to support themselves if tourism stopped. I think that a fair solution would be that only a certain amount of tourists were allowed in certain places at a certain time, so it's completely overcrowded. Also, if there is the problem where there are so many hotels that there are few places for the locals to live, the government should definitely ensure that first and foremost, the locals are able to all live comfortably.

I believe that over tourism can be prevented by putting restriction on how many people can enter areas of tourism. This can give tourist attractions more time to prepare for tourists. In the documentary over tourism seems to be ruining the areas which people live not just having to many people but also trash production because there are too many people buying items and throwing trash away. When people are on vacation they forget about acting civil and act however they want as they are not home in their own country. -Thomas Ellison

I think that this video really scared me. I had never realised how much tourism killed culture and how people were being forced out of their homes. The video definitely scared me because Bermuda is a big place for tourism and it scares me - even if i'm not Bermudian - that one day all of the culture could just disappear. It's so unfair that locals are feeling the need to leave their homes. When they talked about paradise islands and the trash in the middle it astonished me because the fact that anyone would even thing of littering on a place like that was inconceivable before i watched the video.

I have mixed views on the documentary, In this first part of the video people were complaining about how locals were changing their businesses and the market due to tourism which ruins the authenticity of the place. I don't think you can blame the tourists if it is the locals that change for the tourists. But I do agree that the authenticity of places should be kept the same and not disturbed so that it can be treasured and viewed many many people for years to come. Later on in the documentary it talks about how in some places tourists come and ruin the place through trash and pollution. By ruining the place they visit tourists show they have no respect, for the plac, the people who live their and the people who may visit in the future. It ruins The place for everybody. I think over-tourism is a very real problem but it is not 100% tourists fault only like 80%, because if locals build big hotels or organize parties(that will consequently lead to more waste) they are inadvertently destroying that place as well both the landscape physically and the tradition and authenticity of that place.

The tourist problems are something that should have been handled a very long time ago. Tourist go to these places and don't realize that the way of life is a lot different than where they are from. They think that it's ok to do what they do when they are at home but sometimes these places have a different norm. I think that people need to be more educated about a place that they are going to so that they know how to act when they are there. There is also a problem with to many people going to places. I think that there should be stores that you can only go to if you are a local. This will help keep locals there and keep the culture alive. - James Meyer

I think overtourism has its benifits, but it can also have a bad effect. Before I watched this documentary, I didn't think that there would be anything bad about tourism, but now that I've watched it, I can see how overtourism can be a problem. I can see how locals could get annoyed by having too many tourists, and also overtourism could cause problems such as more intense traffic, also more demand for consumer items could cause problems. Tourism is definitely an economic benefit, but it can definitely cause problems. -Kyle

The documentary opened my eyes a bit more to notice that tourism is greatly affecting our community. Now seeing myself go on trips I must sometimes look like a total a**hole to most of locals and that I wasn't realizing that I was destroying the community. Now that tourism is so big, some countries only revolve around tourism and is what holds up their economic system, and without it the country is broke. This could possibly happen if tourism stops in some countries, which would result with many people losing jobs, or we leave the tourism the same way it is and keep building it up until the country is flooded with tourists. Most of the countries that would be affected by lots of tourism would be the small pretty islands surrounded by the ocean. Right now pretty much all of them have tourists but as time grows on, they'll grow heavy with people rolling in, and this is because, once the well known islands are full with people, tourists will start to move to other islands because the popular ones are full, and this will result with those islands getting full with tourists as the population of the world grows. - nate

I think that the Barcelona markets should stop the tourists going just to take pictures and have a different part for tourists only and not have changed the culture just for tourists. -Aiden Swiss
